Madonna Provided The Necessary Support For Kim Petras During This Year's Grammys

Famous personalities and at-home viewers were spellbound when Petras and Smith climbed the stage for their transgressive performance at the 2023 Grammys in February.

However, it turns out that the "I Don't Want It at All" vocalist would not have been able to blow people's minds if Madonna had not offered her some helpful advice before she took over the mic. Recalling the moment leading to her big performance, Petras toldPEOPLE:

"I was so nervous. I was freaking out. After her speech, she turned around and mouthed to me, 'Go get it, b**ch.' That made me feel like, I got this."

The "Like a Virgin" hitmaker did not stop there as she subsequently took to Instagram to share why supporting the musical duo was a priority for her. She wrote:

"It was an honor for me to Introduce Kim Petras and Sam Smith at the Grammys. I wanted to give the last award which was album of the year, but I thought it was more important that I present the first trans- woman performing at the Grammys— a History making moment!! The public display of support made Madonna, whom Petras takes inspiration from, even more important to the trans artist. She expressed that she has always felt a "special connection" between her and the "Die Another Day" actress, sharing that it could be because the 64-year-old did not "push gender, and she wasn't necessarily only super-feminine or super-masculine."

"I think Madonna gave me a lot of hope and strength and stuff when I needed it, even as a kid," she added. The "Future Starts Now" songstress was at the top of the world when she won her first Grammy award and she effused as much during her acceptance speech. While appreciating her co-collaborator, she said:

Last month, The Blast reported that the "I Don't Want It All" singer divulged some details about her life that many of her fans were previously in the dark about during a candid interview.

She started by disclosing that her childhood was not rosy due to her being "very suicidal as a kid" and would have offed herself a long time ago if not for her parents' belief in her talent.

That disclosure seemed to shed light on why she directed an appreciative message to the "person who's responsible for me being alive" during the Grammy Awards ceremony. Besides that, Petras expressed concern about the widespread and unchecked transphobia exhibited by members of society, declaring:

"I hate that another generation is going through this, and I hate that young kids are going through the same sh** I was going through, and that just isn't changing."

The MTV Europe Music Awards winner further shared that it was "sad" to see that people had an agenda against LGBTQ members, as she has "never understood why people were so obsessed with what people do to be happy."

Despite that worry, Petras has high hopes that her public success and accomplishments would help children who had difficulty "belonging" or having "a place in society" "feel inspired" to be themselves.

Furthermore, the Queerty Awards recipient told struggling youngsters that being true to their authentic self would get them "rewarded" for their talent and not their gender or sexuality.
