Singer Kesha revealed that she "almost died" while trying to freeze her eggs and experienced some "horrifying" complications that left her in the hospital for nine days.
Although she is about to embark on a 20-stop tour to promote her new "Gag Order" album later this year, the singer revealed that she almost died in January after she suffered severe complications from trying to freeze her eggs.
Kesha Spent Over A Week In The Hospital And 'Almost Died'
In her Self cover story published on Tuesday, the 36-year-old singer revealed that she almost died when she decided to freeze her eggs earlier this year. "I almost died in January," the "Only Love Can Save Us Now," singer revealed, stating that she is "finally feeling recovered" although it has taken "a couple of months" to feel better.
She didn't drop too many details about the experience," she called it "horrifying," and told the publication that she “developed an uncommon yet serious complication from the fertility procedure” due to a weakened immune system, among other factors. She said she knew that something was wrong after she performed in the Bahamas and felt "too weak to walk."
She then went to a hospital in Miami, where she stayed for nine days. Although she suffered serious complications as a result of the incident, she said that she does "stand by" taking her reproductive health into her own hands and "honoring" her body. “Everyone probably has some semblance of feeling like you share what you’re going through, and, at the same time, it’s almost inviting people to have an opinion about it," she said. "I don’t have that perfectly mapped out.”
'Too Far Gone' Was Written About Ending A Secret Engagement
Last month, the "Eat The Acid" singer told Rolling Stone that she wrote one of her new songs from "Gag Order" called "Too Far Gone" about a secret engagement that she later ended. Although she wouldn't state who the song is about, she did recall scaring her current partner when hives broke out all over her body.
“Sometimes, he has to have a face cream intervention and take them away from me,” she recalled. “The other weekend, I thought it would be a good idea — this was not a good idea — to cover my body in castor oil and do a mask.” Kesha has previously been romantically linked to writer Brad Ashenfelter and drummer Alex Carapetis, but she did not reveal the name of her new boyfriend to Self.
In addition to trying different creams to help her physical health, Kesha is also focused on taking care of her mental health. “I have a support system in place [of therapists] that I speak to weekly or monthly,” she explained, adding that she now loves food after "not allowing myself to eat or enjoy food for so long in my life."
The California native reveals that she "really turned a corner" and now enjoys visiting farmer's markets and cooking in the kitchen herself. Even while she's on tour, she makes sure to save time for food and work it into her busy schedule. “I always have three meal breaks, ’cause being in recovery, I need to have time to sit and have a meal,” Kesha said. “I have about 30 minutes before I go on stage where I meditate, stretch, and do breathing exercises. People probably think I’m back there doing shots, and [my routine is] the most zen shit you’ve ever seen.”
Kesha Says She Found Her 'Own Version Of God'
Elsewhere in the interview, the "Something to Believe In" singer recalled that she struggled to find her community when she was growing up in Tennessee.
“One of the biggest issues in my life was growing up knowing that I wasn’t a completely straight person and going to church after church trying to find my community,” Kesha said. “I went, when I was about 14, to the gay bar in Nashville and instantly felt home. And my biggest issue was nonacceptance and non-love toward queer people. That always got me so stuck, because, ‘God is love, except for…’ That didn’t seem right to me.”
“[I found] my own version of God in the past three years and that led to my writing ‘Eat the Acid.’ A really important line in the song is, ‘I am the one that I’ve been fighting the whole time / Hate has no place in the divine,’” she added.
