According to the late star's agent, Barry McPherson, Willaims was involved in a fatal accident when another car abruptly cut him off while he was driving. Expressing deep sorrow, McPherson stated:

"I'm just devastated. He was the nicest guy. He was so talented. He was an actor's actor. Filmmakers loved him. He's been the heart of Hollywood since the late 1970s. He was really proud of his performance this year. He's been so happy with the work that I got him. He's had a balanced career."

Speaking to PEOPLE, Jacob Gribble, the fire chief for Dorset, Vermont, disclosed that the tragic crash occurred on Monday at approximately 5 p.m. on Route 30 near Dorset, Vermont, specifically by Long Trail Auto.

Gribble further revealed that the incident involved a single car and the "Marathon Man" actor's motorcycle, as investigators believe that the car driver was making a turn and failed to notice the motorcycle's presence. Regrettably, the aviator was the only individual injured in the accident and was airlifted to a hospital in New York for immediate medical attention.

The father-of-two, whose remarkable career spanned several decades, made his film debut in 1975 with the thriller "Deadly Hero." The 71-year-old then achieved a career milestone four years later by portraying George Berger in the film adaptation of the Broadway musical "Hair."

Although the "1941" actor leaves an extraordinary legacy in the acting world, it extends beyond his career to his devoted partner, with whom he shared a loving marriage since 1988. Throughout his life, he often captured and shared cherished moments with her on his social media platforms.

Together, they raised two children – Gill and Elinor, and embraced a private life, splitting their time between Park City, UT, and Manchester Center, VT. Van Sant's IMDB page indicated her involvement in the television series "American Masters" in 1995, although no other information about her other potential projects was listed.

However, it is plausible that she had other ventures in the industry, given her marriage to the "Everwood" star. As to how they first met, it was reported that their initial encounter occurred when she worked as a waitress in a New York restaurant.

The producer steadfastly stood by her husband's side, offering unwavering support during numerous public appearances celebrating his acting endeavors. From film premieres to television show events, they would grace the red carpets together – sometimes with their kids, creating cherished family moments.

Shortly after his untimely passing, Van Sant and her children released a heartfelt statement confirming Williams' death. "As you can imagine, we are shocked and greatly bereaved now. The treat was full of love for his family, life, and craft, and he was truly at the top of his game in all of it," the statement read.

They expressed their profound love and respect for the late patriarch amidst the shock and disbelief and kindly requested privacy as they navigated through their grief.
