“The Boys” and “Scream” star Jack Quaid has signed on to star in a new sci-fi feature from “Barbarian” filmmaker Zach Cregger. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Quaid, the son of actors Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan, will star in the new sci-fi thriller, “Companion,” that’s currently in the works.

The new feature is from the same team who created the 2022 breakout horror film, “Barbarian.” The film will be directed by Drew Hancock, who wrote the script. Details on the story are reportedly being kept under wraps.
Cregger is producing the project with Raphael Margules and J.D. Lifshitz of BoulderLight Pictures. Vertigo’s Roy Lee is also attached to the task.
New Line Cinema acquired “Companion” in a hotly contested bidding auction earlier this year. Cregger was originally going to make it his follow-up to “Barbarian,” but instead, he pivoted on his following script, “Weapons.” The latter is currently in its casting phase of pre-production at New Line. Despite the shift, Cregger and his team helped “Companion” get a studio home and a production green light.
Quaid is a surging talent at the moment. He’s also set to appear in Christopher Nolan’s next film, the historical drama “Oppenheimer,” which arrives in theaters later this summer. Quaid portrays physicist Richard Feynman in the movie opposite Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer. The film documents the Manhattan Project and the team that created the atomic bomb. The Nolan film also stars Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Gary Oldman, and Josh Hartnett. Meanwhile, in the upcoming Warner Bros. animated series, “My Adventures with Superman,” he voices the role of the one and only Big Blue, Superman, aka Clark Kent.
He also had a lead role in last year’s hit “Scream” movie, the franchise’s fifth installment. The film was a box office hit, making $137 million worldwide. He will be back in “The Boys” season 4 as well in the role of Hughie Campbell, a task force member that monitors and brings super-powered individuals to justice. In the hit “Star Trek” animated series, “Star Trek: Lower Decks,” he voices Brad Boimler. The character is set to transition to live-action with Boimler and Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome) set to appear as guest stars in Season 2o of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.
Quad has been quietly building up an excellent resume and list of credits as of late, and now he will get an opportunity for a starring role in a new sci-fi thriller from a hotly-in-demand creative in Cregger. “Barbarian” did well in theaters and was well-liked by critics, scoring 93% with critics on Rotten Tomatoes. It should be interesting to see what Cregger and Hancock have in mind for Quaid’s role in the upcoming sci-fi picture.
Quaid’s next film, “Oppenheimer,” arrives in theaters on July 21. Season 4 of “The Boys” will stream on Amazon Prime Video later. Meanwhile, Season 4 of “Star Trek: Lower Decks” hits Paramount+ later in the summer.
