Rolling Stones' Mick Jagger & Ronnie Wood Pay Tribute To Tina Turner

Trailblazing rock and roll icon Tina Turner has died at 83.

Turner rose to fame in the sixties alongside her late husband, Ike.

The "What's Love Got To Do With It" singer would soon emerge from her husband's shadow and cement a legacy that was all her own. Ike died in 2007.

Turner would be linked to The Rolling Stones during the early years of her career, and her legacy would be remembered and resonate with the band members. As of this writing, lead singer Mick Jagger and guitarist Ronnie Wood have paid tribute to Turner, who passed away at her Switzerland home following a "long illness."

The Rolling Stones had found their footing by the late sixties, having cultivated an image of The Beatles' rough-around-the-edges counterpart, and the documentary "Gimme Shelter" would chronicle this period.

The documentary focuses significantly on the band's unfortunate performance at the Altamont Speedway in Tracy, California. Several attendees of the Altamont Free Concert held on December 6th, 1969, were killed following a collision between the audience and Hells Angels members.

"Gimme Shelter" also focuses on the final dates of the Rolling Stones tour, including a performance at Madison Square Garden, which would feature Ike and Tina opening the show.

Ike and Tina released a cover of Otis Redding's "I've Been Loving You Too Long" on their LP "Outta Season." In the wake of Tina's passing, the performance would circulate on social media, with many praising Tina's haunting performance. Jagger, who would go on to have a memorable friendship with Tina, reportedly said flippantly, "It's nice to have a chick occasionally," opening the show.

Twitter users reacted to the performance.

A fan tweeted, "I never listened to Tina Turner much, but I remember being completely floored when she showed up in 'Gimme Shelter.' She essentially stole the spotlight from the band who was the center of the whole d*mn documentary."

Another wrote, "Tina Turner taught Mick Jagger his trademark strut. This excerpt from Gimme Shelter that shows Tina singing «I've been loving you too long » will forever be one of my favorite things on earth. RIP Queen [black heart]."

A third tweeted, "The first time I saw Gimme Shelter, the performance that left me completely speechless was Tina Turner's riveting rendition of I've Loved You Too Long. An unbelievable performer and a total fucking powerhouse. RIP"

Jagger and Wood would both pay tribute to Turner on their respective Instagram accounts.

Wood posted a series of sweet backstage photos of Turner posing with his young children and wrote, "??God bless you Tina, the Queen Of Rock And Soul and a dear friend to our family. Love and prayers to Tina's family, friends, and loved ones #tinaturner @tinaturner."

Jagger posted a series of photos of Turner on stage circa the 1970s, including snapshots of the duo together. The 79-year-old wrote, "The passing of my wonderful friend Tina Turner saddens me. She was truly an enormously talented performer and singer. She was inspiring, warm, funny, and generous. She helped me so much when I was young, and I will never forget her."

Turner's representative would announce her death on Instagram earlier Wednesday afternoon.

"It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Tina Turner. With her music and boundless passion for life, she enchanted millions of music fans worldwide and inspired the stars of tomorrow."

The announcement continued, "Today we say goodbye to a dear friend who leaves us all her greatest work; her music. All our heartfelt compassion goes out to her family. Tina, we will miss you dearly."
