NBCUniversal Reveals Broadcast Plans For Olympic Games Paris 2024 Across NBC, Peacock, And Telemundo
NBC broadcast coverage for the Olympic Games will include live Olympic daytime takeover, plus an enhanced Olympic Primetime Show. Viewers will also be able to watch live coverage of the opening ceremony on the River Seine across NBC, Peacock, and Telemundo on Friday, July 26, 2024.
With the new broadcast plans, Peacock and NBC will serve as NBCUniversal's primary platforms for the Games of XXXIII Olympiad. The coverage is scheduled for July 26 to August 11, 2024. Every day, NBC will broadcast at least nine hours of daytime coverage of the Summer Games' hottest events, including live finals coverage of swimming, gymnastics, track & field, and more. Due to the time difference and Paris being six hours ahead of the United States Eastern Time Zone, the daytime takeover will feature the day's most popular events live on NBC in the morning and afternoon. This will grant NBC more programming hours for the Paris 2024 games than any previous Olympics.
Additionally, due to the time zone difference, NBC will provide what's described as "an enhanced Olympics primetime show." The primetime show will feature three hours of programming each night and will bring the American audience up close and inside the day of the games, with competitions, moments, stories, and more for the primetime audience. NBCUniversal is also promising the primetime programming will feature an "unprecedented" look behind the scenes, utilizing new technology, and showcasing the greatest athletes in the world competing across Paris for the experience.
For the first time for the Summer Games, Peacock will stream every sport and event, including 329 medal events, and feature full-event replays. The coverage will also include all the NBC programming, curated footage, virtual channels, exclusive programming, and more. Peacock will serve as the streaming home for the games next year.
Meanwhile, Telemundo will feature Spanish-language coverage of the Olympic Games throughout the day with additional coverage on the cable network Universo. The Telemundo broadcast network will feature both the men's and women's soccer competitions in Spanish, focusing mainly on Team USA.
Besides NBC, Peacock, and Telemundo, viewers will be able to check out additional coverage of the Olympic Games through cable networks USA, E!, CNBC, and the GOLF Channel. Programming details for the cable networks will e announced later on. NBCUniversal will also cover the Paris Paralympics from August 28 to September 8, 2024. Paris Paralympics broadcast coverage will be revealed later on.
The 2024 Paris Games will be showcased in full stadiums for the first time since 2018. This will be the third time the city of Paris has hosted the Olympics, following the 1900 and 1924 games, tying London for the most occasions of hosting the Summer Games. Paris is also the city where the modern Olympic Games were conceived 130 years ago. Los Angeles will tie Paris and London when it hosts the Summer Games in 2028. This will mark the first Olympic Summer Games in the U.S. in 32 years. L.A. previously hosted the Olympics in 1932 and 1984. The last edition of the Summer Games in the U.S. were the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games.
NBCUniversal also states that organizers for the Summer Games in Paris are reimagining the Olympics to make them more accessible to the public and showcase the city of Paris to the world. Beach volleyball will be held at the Eiffel Tower, equestrian events will be held at the Palace of Versailles, and urban sports will be held at the Place de la Concorde. Surfing events will take place in Tahiti, part of French Polynesia. The intent is to showcase iconic Parisian landmarks with the events.
The plan for the Opening Ceremony is to transform the River Seine into the world's biggest theatrical stage rather than holding the event at a stadium. This will include a four-mile-long flotilla that will carry the athletes from more than 200 countries past hundreds of thousands of spectators watching from the banks.
2024 Olympic Games Paris coverage kicks off on Friday, July 26, 2024, with the Opening Ceremony airing on NBC, Peacock, and Telemundo.
