"Star Wars alum Mark Hamill and Marvel's Tom Hiddleston have been tapped to star in a new Stephen King adaptation of "The Life of Chuck," which will be directed by frequent King collaborator Mike Flanagan.
Flanagan has already adapted several of King's works, including "Doctor Sleep," the sequel to "The Shining." Flanagan has also worked with Mark Hamill before in "The Fall of the House of Usher." The collaboration of works by Edgar Allan Poe is expected to hit Netflix later this year, although no release date has yet to be announced.
Now Tom Hiddleston, who is no stranger to horror films, will be joining the mix in an adaption of King's short story "The Life of Chuck."
'Star Wars' Alum Mark Hamill & Marvel's Tom Hiddleston To Star In Stephen King Adaptation ‘The Life Of Chuck’ For Mike Flanagan
Deadline was the first to report that the upcoming project will be highly sought after at the upcoming Cannes market. Mike Flanagan will be directing, writing, and producing the film for his Intrepid Pictures banner alongside producer Trevor Macy. FilmNation will be handling the international rights to the film while WME Independent will be handling the domestic sales.
"The Life of Chuck" is a short story from Stephen King's 2020 anthology "If It Bleeds." The story is actually three separate stories that all come together into one to tell the biography of Charles Krantz's life in reverse. The story starts with his death of a brain tumor at age 39 and ends with his childhood in a house that is suspected to be haunted.
This is the latest project to join the Cannes market for FilmNation. The comedy "The Invite" featuring Amy Adams and Paul Rudd is also on the slate, as well as the Dave Bautista action-thriller "The Cooler."
Mark Hamill is best known for starring as Luke Skywalker in the "Star Wars" franchise while Tom Hiddleston played Loki in the Marvel franchise.
Theo James To Star In Another Stephen King Adaption 'The Monkey
It seems that there are going to be many of King's works getting an adaption in the upcoming months. Deadline also reported that "The White Lotus" star Theo James has also been tapped to play the lead in a new horror movie based on Stephen King's short story "The Monkey."
James Wan, who is the creator of "The Conjuring" universe, is behind this project. Wan also co-created the "Saw" and "Insidious" franchises as well. Wan will be producing the film with his Atomic Monster partner Michael Clear (M3GAN), C2 Motion Picture Group’s Jason Cloth (Joker), and Dave Caplan (Babylon). The story has been adapted for the screen by "Longleds" filmmaker Osgood Perkins, who will also direct the film.
The supernatural story has been adapted for the screen by genre specialist Osgood Perkins (Longlegs), who also will direct. Black Bear International will handle the distribution rights to the project ahead of its premiere at the Cannes market, where it will be joining "The Life of Chuck."
However, "The Monkey" tells a very different story, which focuses on two twin brothers - Hal and Bill - finding their father's old money toy in the attic. After its discovery, a series of gruesome deaths start to happen around them. After they decide to throw the monkey away, the deaths stop and they move on. Throughout the years, they eventually grow apart. However, when the mysterious deaths suddenly start to happen again, the brothers realize they have to team up and destroy it for good.
Theo James will likely play either Hal or Bill. No other casting information has been reported at this time. However, Automatik’s Brian Kavanaugh-Jones (Insidious) and Fred Berger (La La Land), Chris Ferguson (Child’s Play), and Stars Collective’s Peter Luo and Nancy Xu have all been announced to executive produce the film alongside John Friedberg (Greenland) for Black Bear International.
James Wan Has Nothing But Praise For 'The Godfather Of The Horror Genre'
In a statement about "The Monkey," James Wan said, “Stephen King is the godfather of the horror genre. He had a huge influence on me as a child and throughout my career, and it’s always been a dream to help bring one of his stories to life. The Monkey is a personal favorite, with its simple, iconic, and incredibly marketable conceit. And I can’t imagine anyone better than a visionary and lifelong genre fan like Osgood to bring this to life.”
Cloth and Caplan added, “We couldn’t be more excited to partner with Osgood, James, Brian, and our friends at Black Bear International to present Stephen King’s The Monkey. It perfectly checks the box of what is working in the marketplace right now and will be a hot property. We can’t wait for audiences to see Theo James in this role – he is really going to knock it out of the park with an amazing performance.”
