Groff's role in "Doctor Who" is unknown, but it is said to be a "key role" in the iconic television series. Speaking on the news via a press release, Groff stated, "I am so thrilled to jump into the extraordinary mind of Russell T Davies and watch the incredible Ncuti Gatwa soar in this iconic role!"

After The Doctor's latest regeneration, the time-traveling Gallifreyan took the form of a familiar face, that of The Tenth Doctor (Tennant). This new iteration of The Doctor named The Fourteenth Doctor, will reunite with his former companion, Donna Noble (Catherine Tate), in the upcoming special episodes, including the 60th anniversary special. Neil Patrick Harris ("How I Met Your Mother," "The Smurfs") is also set to appear in the anniversary special as a villain.
Ncuti Gatwa will take over the role of The Fifteenth Doctor in his first episode airing over "the festive period" later this year. Groff is expected to appear in the new upcoming season. Season 14 will also feature Yasmin Finney joining the cast as Rose.
The special episodes of "Doctor Who" featuring Tennant's return as The Doctor air later this November, streaming on Disney+ in the US and airing on the BBC in the UK and Ireland.
