'The Super Mario Bros. Movie' Crushes Box Office For Second Straight Weekend

Nintendo and Illumination's "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" had another crushing win at the box office over the weekend, topping the charts for its second straight week. Per Box Office Mojo, the film earned another $92.3 million over the weekend, which brings its current domestic total to $353 million and $692 million worldwide. The film should easily cross over $700 million worldwide before the end of the day on Monday (April 17).

What is more impressive is its dropoff between its first and second weekend. The film only fell about 37% in its second week of release. Major blockbusters like this tend to be very frontloaded, but the low dropoff indicates that the movie will likely have decent staying power at the box office.

At this rate, "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" should have no issue reaching $1 billion worldwide at the box office, if not higher. The film marked the first major motion picture for a Nintendo video game property since the greatly maligned 1993 "Super Mario Bros." live-action movie that starred the late Bob Hoskins as Mario, John Leguizamo as Luigi, and the late Dennis Hopper as King Koopa. The film was a flop, and it was so bad that Nintendo wouldn't allow any adaptations of its properties for years until now.

While critics were relatively mixed on the video game movie, audiences have loved and ultimately embraced the film. It bodes well for future collaborations between Nintendo, Illumination, and Universal Pictures. Nintendo also collaborated with Universal Theme Parks, with Super Nintendo World opening at Universal Studios Hollywood earlier this year.

Elsewhere, "The Pope's Exorcist," starring Oscar winner Russell Crowe, performed at No. 2, grossing only $9 million. "John Wick: Chapter 4" came in at No. 3 with another $8 million, bringing its current domestic total to $160 million domestic and $340 million worldwide. So far, that is the highest worldwide gross for a "John Wick" film. It should surpass the highest domestic total for "John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum," at $171 million domestic in weeks.

The new horror comedy mashup, "Renfield," opened pretty soft over the weekend at No. 4 with only about $8 million. The film boasted a fun concept with Oscar-winner Nicolas Cage as Count Dracula and Nicholas Hoult as his long-suffering familiar and servant, Renfield. The film's reported budget is about $65 million, so it likely won't break even.

The film doesn't look to have too much in the way of heavy competition at the box office in the coming weeks until Marvel Studios and Disney release "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" on May 5. "Evil Dead Rise" opens in theaters on April 21 from Warner Bros. It is the latest theatrical reboot for the famous "Evil Dead" horror film franchise. The last "Evil Dead" movie released in theaters was the 2013 reboot, which had an opening weekend of $25 million in April 2013. Plus, it's a different type and more adult audience than "The Super Mario Bros. Movie." So, the forecast looks suitable for Mario and his friends to pick up another box office victory.

"The Super Mario Bros. Movie" still has its Japan release ahead of on April 28. The film stars Chris Pratt as the voice of Mario, Charlie Day as the voice of Luigi, Jack Black as the voice of Bowser, Anya Taylor- Joy as the voice of Princess Peach, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong. The film is now open in theaters across the U.S.
