Matthew McConaughey Reveals Turbulent Flight Left Passengers In 'Shock'
The latest episode of SiriusXM's "Let's Talk Off Camera With Kelly Ripa" podcast featured a heart-to-heart discussion with the "Interstellar" star. During their conversation, the 53-year-old got candid about the Lufthansa flight that suddenly dropped 4,000 feet after being hit by a wave of turbulence.
The TV personality recalled the horrifying moment: "It's suspended disbelief. I mean, it's zero gravity. Your red wine, the glass, and the plates your food was on are all suspended, floating, still just in the air."
The People's Choice Award winner continued, "And to look at it for that long, which wasn't that long -- one, two, three, four [seconds] -- and then everything just comes crashing down," noting he was overwhelmed by the experience.
The "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days" actor described the ordeal as "a hell of a scare," explaining he felt "a 100 percent feeling" that no one could control such situations. Even in distress, the first thing on the entertainer's mind was not his safety but that of his wife, Alves.
"My tray table is what held me down. I did not have my seatbelt on, and there was no warning right before it happened," the Texas heartthrob revealed, stating that he "immediately reached over, made sure Camila had her seatbelt on."
The father-of-three recounted the surreal affair, saying, "[We] held hands just saying, 'OK, is that it? Is there another one coming?' Another one did come," adding that people had varied reactions to the turbulence.
"It was odd. You hear people's reactions. Some people were ghost silent. Some people had big bursts of laughter. And it was not like, 'Oh, this is fun.' It was like, 'I'm in shock,'" the TV personality observed.
As for why the 53-year-old did not freak out in the terrifying situation, McConaughey explained that his pilot friend had been traveling with the couple and reassured him of their safety.
During the turbulence, the TCA Award winner confessed that he wondered if the plane would survive the severe air currents as he heard the steel buckle. However, his pilot pal remained calm through the ride, comforting the Hollywood sensation that the structure would not cave.
"I was like, 'Can the plane hold that?' And he was like, 'These things are so tested that yes, don't worry, the plane structurally can hold that.' That was a big relief," the media personality exclaimed, telling the host his friend vowed to fly the plane if anything went wrong.

The mother-of-three expressed her gratitude to God for protecting the flight's passengers and praised the staff at Marriott Bonvoy for their kindness as the couple spent the night at the hotel. Additionally, the Women of Today website founder revealed that she and her beau needed to unwind at the bar before enjoying a good night's rest.
