Hollywood star Rob Lowe shared the secret to his successful 31 years of marriage to renowned make-up artist Sheryl Berkoff. In an interview, the "Unstable" star said finding the right person and building a solid foundation of love and friendship is the first step in the right direction. 

He shared that marrying your best friend will "sustain when the other stuff ebbs and flows." Lowe also emphasized the importance of forgiveness and physical attraction for a lasting union. The couple met on a movie set in 1990 and tied the knot in 1991.

In a recent interview on the "Table for Two with Bruce Bozzi" podcast on iHeartRadio, Rob Lowe gave his two cents on how to make a marriage last.

"The Outsiders" star, who has been married to Sheryl Berkoff for 31 years, emphasized the importance of finding the right partner and a strong foundation friendship leads to lasting love. 

Sharing his thoughts on marriage, Lowe said, per People magazine, "[Marriage] is hard anywhere; it is not just Hollywood – it's everywhere."

He continued, "Sheryl was and is my best friend. So if you marry for anything other than the fact that it is your best friend, you're at a disadvantage because that will sustain when the other stuff ebbs and flows."

During the conversation with Bozzi, Lowe maintained that forgiveness is the key to a successful long-term relationship. According to the "Unstable" actor, forgiveness is crucial in allowing a connection to progress.

He also advised being mindful of the issues, stating, "People say marriage takes work. I'm unsure if it takes work, but forgiveness and being aware of what hill you're willing to die on."

In addition to forgiveness, Lowe highlighted the importance of keeping the physical spark alive for a successful long-term relationship, saying, "I do believe you need the heat for sure." 

"If you don't have the heat – and that's a chemical thing – I mean, I still have it with Sheryl, you gotta keep the heat," he added.

Acknowledging the intensity of attraction may wax and wane over time; he shared, "That comes and goes too. There are times when you are like, 'Nah.' And then there are times when you are wild for somebody."

Rob Lowe Describes Feeling 'Seen' By Sheryl Berkoff

In an interview with People last year, the "9-1-1: Lone Star" actor opened up about his relationship with his wife. Lowe revealed that he knew from the beginning that Berkoff was the one for him.

He shared that he felt "seen" by her in a way he never had before. "I had the feeling that if I was ever going to be able to make it work with anybody, it was Sheryl," he stated.

The actor expressed his gratitude that Berkoff took a chance on him and saw something in him that no one else had, describing their marriage as one of the greatest "miracles" of his life. "She saw things in me that nobody had ever seen before," he said.

Adulating his wife, Lowe added, "I still think she's the hottest, sexiest, most beautiful, insane, complicated, entertaining person that I know, in addition to being a great mother."

Their Romance Is Three Decades Strong

Lowe and Berkoff first met while working on the 1990 erotic thriller "Bad Influence." In 1991, the couple tied the knot and have been together since, sharing two sons, Matthew Edward, 30, and John Owen, 28.

On their 31st wedding anniversary, Lowe took to Instagram to celebrate by sharing a photo of Berkoff with a heartfelt caption expressing his love and admiration for her. 

"Happy 31st Anniversary, baby," he wrote. "Your love has made my world. You are as beautiful, knowledgeable, fascinating, kind, and hilarious as you were years ago."

"Partners in love for life!!" the actor added, concluding his heartfelt message.
