MSCHF Is Releasing Backward-Forward Sneakers
By Arthur Boiron on April 1, 2023 at 9:00 AM EDT
MSCHF is a collective of artists that became famous lately for their original but scandalous creations. The latest scandal they had to deal with was the Satan Shoes of Lil Nas X which were in direct collaboration with the rapper for the release of his new song: "Montero." The artists that designed the shoes were attacked by religious people who didn't like at all the fact that a pair of shoes would praise Satan. Even Nike decided to attack the company to be sure there are never sold to anyone.
But recently, the word scandalous has been removed from their vocabulary since the Big Red Boot that was released a month ago was a simple tribute to the famous manga and anime "Astro Boy." Even though it is almost unwearable, the shoe made its effect, and because of the low stock, its resell is high, and it is nearly impossible to get your hands on these. And to continue with simple positivity and creation, they decided to release an original concept that could revolutionize the sneaker world.
A Backward-Forward Sneaker
Called the BWD shoe, these are not sneakers like the others you know already, because the shoe has two openings where you can put your feet in. It means you can wear it forward or backward, so you can choose which side you want for the day every time you wear them. It's like having two pairs of sneakers in one, and It's a fantastic idea. Also, there is a closed side, which is better when the temperature outside is not that warm, and there's another open side, like a slipper, which is nice for warm places like California.
Also, the shoe's materials make it stylish and cool, with white leather, red suede on the heel, grey stripes that make us think of Off-White, and finally, a speckled outsole. Like the other shoes from MSCHF, these will be hard to cop, and the resell will be high right after the release, but how is that possible? How so much hype can come from a brand that, instead of the Satan Shoes and some boots you have never heard about before? Well, that's because they are real marketing experts.
MSCHF, The Kings Of Buzz And Scandal
There is one thing for sure, MSCHF knows how to get viral in the sneakers industry. For the Big Red Boot, it was soft marketing but effective because Janelle MonaƩ, Lil Nas X, Ciara, Diplo, Lil Wayne, and Coi Leray, and there's no need to go further; you understand how strong MSCHF originality and marketing seduces stars in the sneakers industry. And that's also what Kanye west was doing these last years with the Yeezy Foam Runners, for example. Kanye was creating something original but shocking so that people talk about it, criticize it, then wear it and start to like it in each colorway. MSCHF has applied precisely the same tactic for the Big Red Boot, but they could do it because of other scandals before this last release.
Before the Big Red Boot, even before the Satan Shoes, they released the Wavy Baby in collaboration with Tyga, a modified Vans. Of course, like the Satan Shoes, they have been attacked by Vans because they took their design without authorization, but even before that, they also released the contrary of the Satan Shoes, the Jesus Shoes. These were one of the first creations of MSCHF and are a bootleg of White Air max 97 like the Satan Shoes. However, these were well seen in the sneakers culture.
Because contrary to the Satan Shoes, these did not give a bad image of Nike and did not disturb a lot of the population. While Satan's Shoes contained human blood, Jesus' Shoes contained holy water from the River Jordan, and at that time, even Drake started to wear these shoes. So what could be their first scandal wasn't since people weren't disturbed by this one. This first try failed since their goal was to become famous with their creations and shock the world.
Regarding the BWD shoe, these are expected to release on April 11 at 2 p.m. ET on MSCHF Sneakers app and website at $135. So if you want to get your hands on these, be sure to be on time because you won't be the only one looking for these sneakers.
