'Shrinking' Gets Season 2 Renewal
Apple TV+ renewed the show ahead of the eighth episode of the first season debuting on Friday, March 10. The first season is set to consist of 10 episodes. The show's breakout global success prompted the quick renewal before the first season even finished airing.
The series is co-created by Jason Segel, Bill Lawrence, and Brett Goldstein. The show has been well-received by critics, scoring 81% on Rotten Tomatoes.
The series stars Segel and Harrison Ford ("Star Wars," "Indiana Jones") in one of his first television roles. Other cast members include Jessica Williams, Christa Miller, Lukita Maxwell, Michael Urie, and Luke Tennie.
Speaking on the announcement via a press release, Apple TV+ Head of Programming Matt Cherniss commented, "We have loved the engaging, touching, and hilarious world of ‘Shrinking’ since the beginning, and it has been wonderful to watch as audiences around the world continue to connect with these big-hearted characters." He continued, "We can’t wait for viewers to experience what the cast and creative team have for season two."
The story of the show follows Jimmy Laid (Segel), a therapist who is grieving the loss of his wife. He starts dealing with his grief by telling his patients what he completely thinks, causing massive changes in their lives.
In this week's new episode of the show, "Boop," Paul and Brian come to the aid of Jimmy when Alice (Maxwell), Jimmy's daughter, starts acting out. Meanwhile, Liz (Miller) and Sean (Tennie) show support to Gaby (Williams) by accompanying her to an event. The episode is also directed by actor and filmmaker Zach Braff ("Scrubs," "Garden State").
The series has a top-notch pedigree behind the camera with Emmy Award-winning executive producers Lawrence and Lasso, who are best known for another hit Apple TV+ series, "Ted Lasso." "Ted Lasso" has already earned two Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Comedy Series. Segel also executive produces "Shrinking," which is produced by Warner Bros. Television, where Lawrence and Goldstein both have overall deals with Lawrence's Doozer Productions banner.
"Shrinking" is the latest original series for Apple to receive a renewal. Other shows that earned Season 2 renewals are "Acapulco," "Tehran," "Bad Sisters," "Surface," "Trying," "For All Mankind," and "Pachinko." Apple's "Schmigadoon!" is expected to debut its second season in April. "Schmigadoon" also won a Primetime Emmy Award last year for "Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics." The acclaimed series "Severance" also has a second season in the works.
New episodes of "Shrinking" debut on Friday on Apple TV+. The freshman season consists of 10 episodes. Meanwhile, Lawrence and Goldsteine's "Ted Lasso" will see its third season bow on Apple TV+ on March 15.
