In December 2020, Elliot publicly came out as transgender and expressed his gratitude for arriving at that point in his life in a Twitter post. At the time, he wrote, "I feel lucky to be writing this. To be here. To have arrived at this place in my life."

In the same post, the actor expressed gratitude for the amazing individual who has uplifted and supported him throughout his journey. "I am grateful for the incredible people who have helped me along this journey. I can't begin to express how remarkable it feels to finally love who I am enough to pursue my authentic self," he wrote per Page Six.

He expressed his love and pride for being a transgender and queer person and concluded with heartfelt words, writing, "I love that I am trans. I love that I am queer. And the more I hold myself close and fully embrace who I am, the more I dream, the more my heart grows, and the more I thrive."

After divorcing dancer Emma Portner in January, he joined a dating app in July 2021. The pair filed for a contested divorce in a Manhattan Supreme Court three years after they tied the knot in January 2018.

In a joint statement, according to Page Six, they announced their decision to end their marriage but shared that they remain friends with the utmost respect for each other.
