‘Poker Face’ Gets Early Season 2 Renewal
The mystery-of-the-week series is still in the midst of its 10-episode first season. The show stars Natasha Lyonne (“American Pie,” “Russian Doll”) as Charlie, a person with a keen ability to tell when people are lying. After hitting the road in her Plymouth Barracuda, she encounters a new cast of characters at every stop, encountering strange crimes she can’t help but solve.
The series is created and executive produced by Rian Johnson. It marks Johnson and producing partner Ram Bergman’s first television show. Star Lyonne also executive produces the show under her Animal Pictures production banner. Lyonne also serves as co-writer and director of Episode 108 for the first season, ‘The Orpheus Syndrome.” Johnson directed the first two episodes of Season 1.
The show has received widespread critical acclaim since its debut, with the series currently rated at 99% on Rotten Tomatoes. The first season also features an impressive roster of guest stars, including Adrien Brody, Angel Desai, Audrey Corsa, Benjamin Bratt, Cherry Jones, Hong Chau, Rhea Perlman, Ron Perlman, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Jameela Jamil, Lil Rel Howery, Luis Guzmán, Chloë Sevigny, Simon Helberg, Tim Blake Nelson, Tim Meadows, and many more.
Speaking on the renewal, NBCUniversal Television and Streaming Chairman of Entertainment Content Suvan Rovner said in a statement, “‘Poker Face is one of those rare, undeniable shows that we all fell in love with from the start, but the critical acclaim and viewer response has been beyond our wildest dreams.” She continued, “Working alongside the creative genius of Rian Johnson, Natasha Lyonne, and Ram Bergman, along with our partners at MRC and T-Street, has been a spectacular ride, and we can’t wait to hit the road for another season as we continue to build momentum across Peacock’s originals slate.”
It looks like another television hit for Lyonne, who also stars in the hit Netflix comedy series “Russian Doll,” which she co-created alongside Leslye Headland and Amy Poehler. Lyonne also served as a director, writer, and executive producer for the show. It earned her three Primetime Emmy Award nominations in 2019, including for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series, Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series, and Outstanding Comedy Series.
“Russian Doll” debuted its second season on the streamer last year. Netflix has not yet renewed the show for a third season.
Meanwhile, “Poker Face” creator Johnson just received the second Academy Award nomination for his career, with his script for “Glass Onion” receiving an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay. A third installment of his “Knives Out” franchise is currently in the works at Netflix. Lyonne also has a cameo appearance in “Glass Onion.”
“Poker Face” is streaming weekly on Peacock with new episodes of the first season debuting on Thursday.
