Paul Mescal Finally Speaks On Phoebe Bridgers Breakup Rumors

Paul Mescal has finally addressed speculations that he and Phoebe Bridgers have broken up after dating for almost two years. The "Normal People" star spoke about being tempted to clear the rumors but has decided to keep his personal life private. 

The rumors of their breakup began last year after Bridgers alluded to it in the lyrics of one of her songs. Mescal himself also recently did a cover of a famous Taylor Swift breakup song, seemingly alluding to a possible breakup. 

Mescal and the "Kyoto" singer were first romantically linked after fans caught them flirting on Twitter. The next year, they made their couple's red carpet debut and then attended the 2022 Met Gala together.

Amid rumors of his breakup from singer Phoebe Bridgers, Paul Mescal is finally talking about all the speculation. The actor had a profile interview with Vanity Fair, which was published on February 15th, where he spoke about the rumors. 

The Oscar nominated actor said, "But I don't think that's a wise thing to do. When 'Normal People' came out, I was very forthright in interviews, and it didn't actually serve me. But the temptation still exists to be like, 'Shut the f**k up. This is my life. This is what's going on. Or this is what's not going on.'"

During the interview, Mescal also talked about how he intends to keep his personal life private and away from his fans. The "Normal People" star noted, however, that he will always feel his fans' love and support. 

He said, "As much as I can, that's going to be my life that is private. That's a difficult thing to achieve. But giving strangers an answer about my life doesn't actually help me. It's like a quick boost of serotonin, being like, 'I've said what I need to say.' And then it's just Twitter fodder."

Despite how private Bridgers and Mescal have been with their love life, by the end of 2022, fans became convinced that the couple had broken up due to the lyrics of a song she'd released. The song was a collaboration with SZA, titled "Ghost in the Machine," and its lyrics alluded to a split. Bridgers is yet to comment on the rumors going around social media. 

Mescal, meanwhile, also recently performed a song alluding to the end of the couple's relationship. On Valentine's Day, the actor was featured in a video for W Magazine, singing a lyrical cover of Taylor Swift's famous breakup song "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together."

According to Bustle, the actor read out the first line, smirking and chuckling at this particular line, "Cause like we hadn't seen each other in a month, when you said you needed space." Mescal then said, "What? — it's like making your grandparents improv to Olivia Rodrigo's ''Brutal' while expecting them to keep a straight face."

At the end of the video, Mescal talked about how the song is kind of sad, but he tried his best to make it fun. In the comments, fans speculated that his performance was confirmation of the breakup, with one comment saying, "Phoebe Bridgers has entered the chat." Another comment read, "Thanks for the confirmation."

According to E! News, Mescal and Bridgers were first linked romantically in May 2020 after fans spotted them flirting on Twitter. The duo was exchanging tweets about Mescal's popular show, "Normal People." The following year, they made their official couple debut on the red carpet at a November event. 

Mescal and Bridgers were also spotted at a Halloween party in a phot shared on Instagram by comedian and talk show host, Ziwe.

In May 2022, the couple attended the Met Gala together and looked very happy posing for the cameras. Photos showed the singer and actor holding hands, cozying up adorably, and exchanging loved-up looks.
