Asher, an aspiring writer and filmmaker, credits his celebrity crush, Selena Gomez, for writing the original song. He worked on it alone before bringing it to his stepfather Donnie Wahlberg, 52, in the hopes that he would record it. Wahlberg suggested that Asher sing the song himself, and after some hesitation agreed to do it with Wahlberg's assistance. Wahlberg also called upon some help from his son Elijah, 21, who is the frontman for the band Pink Laces. Once the song was recorded, Asher then got help from his father, John Asher, a filmmaker, to film a music video.

"It was a joy to help Evan make his song a reality. He is such an incredibly sincere young man, who really has the heart of a saint and the spirit of an artist, but none of this was handed to him. He had to put in a lot of work and prove that he was committed to the process," Wahlberg told PEOPLE. "Whether or not music is his ultimate path, the act of Evan writing and recording this song is an amazing achievement and truly a touching dedication to his favorite artist. I couldn't be more proud of him."
