The Super Bowl is just days away, and one of NFL Network's broadcasters will no longer be part of the coverage due to an incident with a woman that occurred in a hotel.
NFL Network has announced that former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Michael Irvin will not make any of his scheduled appearances for the remainder of Super Bowl week. The news comes after a woman complained about an incident involving Irvin's behavior during an encounter Sunday evening in Arizona.
Michael Irvin Pulled From NFL Network Super Bowl Coverage
On Sunday evening, Michael Irvin reportedly had an interaction with a woman while inside a hotel in Arizona, where the Super Bowl is taking place. The woman reportedly said Irvin had bad conduct after he had returned to the lobby of the hotel after he had a night out in Glendale.
“Michael Irvin will not be a part of NFL Network’s Super Bowl LVII week coverage,” Alex Riethmiller, NFL Media vice president of communications, said in a statement.
It is unclear when or if Irvin will return to NFL Network at this time.
Irvin Speaks Out Regarding Incident At Hand
Michael Irvin conducted a phone interview with The Dallas Morning News to speak out about the incident, saying he is "baffled" with everything that is happening.
Irvin explained that the incident in question occurred after Irvin had dinner and drinks with former Cowboys safety Michael Brooks. Afterward, Irvin returned to the hotel at which he is staying for the week, and met a woman in the lobby, which is where the incident reportedly happened.
“Honestly, I’m a bit baffled with it all,” Irvin told the newpaper. “This all happened in a 45-second conversation in the lobby. When I got back after going out … I came into the lobby, and I talked to somebody. I talked to this girl. I don’t know her, and I talked to her for about 45 seconds."
“We shook hands. Then, I left. … That’s all I know,” he continued.
The former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver went on to say he had never seen the woman before and has not seen her since their talk. He did admit he is unable to recall the specific details of their conversation but does remember the conversation did not last longer than a minute, and he claims the only physical contact he had with her was the handshake.
“I don’t really recall that conversation, to tell you the truth,” Irvin continued to explain to the newspaper. “We were out drinking. It was just a friendly conversation. ‘What’s up?’ I don’t even know. … I am totally perplexed.”
Glendale Police Get Involved
According to The Dallas Morning News, a Glendale police spokesperson, as well as officers from other local police departments, said Tuesday that they have no knowledge of any incident involving Irvin.
Irvin went on to say there “absolutely was no sexual wrongdoing.”
“What law did I break?” Irvin said. “There was definitely nothing physical. … That’s honestly all that happened. Nobody was in my room. It was a 45-second conversation in the lobby, a handshake and we left. … I don’t know. I don’t know what this is, and it’s running me crazy.”
NFL Network announced they made the decision to pull Irvin from the Super Bowl coverage for the remainder of the week earlier today.
