Last year, Johnny Depp made headlines due to his lawsuit against his ex-wife, Amber Heard, 35, who he sued for defamation after she wrote an op-ed for The Washington Post, where she referred to herself as a “public figure representing domestic abuse.”
The trial was one of the biggest, most watched trials in history, which actually helped out Dior's sales last year, according to LVMH CEO Bernard Arnault and the 2022 financial report.
Dior Sauvage Cashed In
The LVMH CEO, Bernard Arnault, presented the brand’s 2022 financial report on January 26, 2023, and was ecstatic to announce the profit Dior made.
In fact, Dior Sauvage was “a leader in perfume sales” throughout 2022, even “achieving remarkable success” that the CEO said was “driven by the image of Johnny Depp.”
“You’ve probably seen the ads; that’s working very well,” Arnault said during his presentation, referring to the ads with the "Pirates of the Caribbean" actor.
Dior Sauvage kept Depp as the face of the product, despite both The Walt Disney Company and Warner Bros. dropping the actor due to the claims against him. Warner Bros first dropped Depp in the “The Fantastic Beasts” franchise and recast him with Mads Mikkelson. Disney shortly followed suit, dropping the actor from the iconic role of Jack Sparrow in the upcoming "Pirates of the Caribbean" film.
The 2022 financial report states that “the continued global success of Dior’s Sauvage, once again world leader in 2022,” was a main point of success. The other beauty-related highlight mentioned was “A remarkable rebound for Sephora, which confirmed its place as world leader in the distribution of beauty products.”
Johnny Depp Moves On After Defamation Trial
Depp is known for his roles in “Edward Scissorhands” (1990), “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape” (1993), “Sleepy Hollow” (1999), “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” (2005), and more, but he is probably best known for portraying the savvy pirate in all five “Pirates of the Caribbean“ films, including “Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl” (2003), “Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” (2006), “Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World’s End” (2007), “Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” (2011), and “Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” (2017).
Although Depp won’t return as Captain Jack Sparrow for the movies due to his ex-wife’s, Amber Heard’s, allegations, the 59-year-old actor did bring out the beloved pirate to help make a terminally ill child’s dream come true.
In the now-viral video, Johnny Depp dressed up as the beloved Jack Sparrow from the “Pirates of the Caribbean” films for a terminally ill child, Kori. “So, Capt. Kori, terribly sorry I missed out on this,” Depp said in the video. “Meant to say it, forgot to say it, didn’t say it, gonna say it now. Saying it, I’ll say it. I hear tell of something they speak about in the ages of now called the YouTube channel, which I don’t understand, but why not?”
Later on in the video, Depp promised he would help spread awareness of Kori and his channel as it “will make for a wonderful entertainment expertise momentary lapse of togetherness altogether in one space, but far apart, but then, at the same time, very close. Curious, enduring, and strange.”
The actor closed by saying, “I wish you the best of luck, I am your number one fan, Captain Kori.”
Depp is also part of the 2023 Hollywood Vampires band tour, with the actor making many United Kingdom appearances throughout the summer.
