Royal Family Might Reconcile With Prince Harry And Meghan Markle
Royal expert Jonathan Sacerdoti spoke to Us Weekly and shared that he thinks the Royal family might reconcile with Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan. The journalist said the reconciliation might be temporary, but it's for the sake of King Charles III's upcoming coronation.
He stated, "I suspect that some efforts are going on to try and make some form of reconciliation … I think because they don't want [family tensions] to upstage what's going on on that very important day. I think it's going to be extremely difficult for them as a family — and more broadly, for the nation and the Institution — to forgive what's happened."
The upcoming coronation has been scheduled for May 6th, 2023, which is also Archie's fourth birthday. King Charles's wife, Camilla, will also assume her new title as Queen Consort during the coronation.
They've Been Open About Their Time As Senior Royals
Since Harry and Meghan stepped back from their positions as senior royals in 2020, they've been very open about their experiences. The couple has shared stories from their time as royals in a tell-all interview with CBS, a Netflix docuseries, and Harry's recently released memoir, Spare.
They've also aired their grievances with the monarchy, deeming it a "corrupt" institution, and also the British press. In his memoir, Harry wrote about a fight he had with Prince William after he allegedly called Meghan names, including "rude and difficult."
The Duke shared that his brother, William, "grabbed" him by the collar and "knocked [him] to the floor" during the fight, adding that he crashed into his dog's bowl, which broke and tore his skin.
Prince Harry Also Wrote About His Father In 'Spare'
Asides from his claims concerning William, who's currently the heir to the British throne, Harry has also openly criticized his father. In his memoir, he shared that Charles once said the family didn't have "enough money to go around," which meant he and Meghan would have to handle their finances. However, William and Kate weren't exempted from access to the family funds.
Harry wrote, per Us Weekly, "Pa might have dreaded the rising cost of maintaining us, but what he really couldn't stomach was someone new dominating the monarchy, grabbing the limelight, someone shiny and new coming in and overshadowing him. He'd lived through that before, and had no interest in living through it again."
The Family Ties Are Strained
During Sacerdoti's conversation with Us Weekly, he also noted that Harry's statements on his interactions with his family aren't a good sign that the reconciliation would last. He said, "I think Harry and Meghan have said they're expecting an apology, but I think there aren't many people who agree that it's due that way round."
Sacerdoti continued, "Some of the individuals within [Spare] — the king, the queen, and the Prince of Wales — all come out of that book so badly. They're so broadly criticized by Harry, so nastily criticized in sections, that I think they could be feeling very sore about this."
The Oxford alum then explained that the Royal family might be staying quiet amidst all the criticism because they don't want to provoke Harry and Meghan further. He said the attacks aren't just "damaging not just to them emotionally and personally, but to the nation because this is an attack effectively on part of the Constitution of Great Britain."
