"Only Murders in The Building" is getting a new cast member, Selena Gomez has revealed!
The mystery comedy-drama television series caught viewers' eye from the first time it aired in August 2021, receiving multiple accolades, including a 99% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and 17 Emmy nominations. It appears that the show is getting ready to blow even more minds with the addition of its newest onscreen star, the OG actress Meryl Streep.
Meryl Streep Is Beyond Helpful As She Joins "Only Murders" Cast
As Gomez, Steve Martin, and Martin Short prepare to investigate the death of Ben Glenroy — played by Paul Rudd — in its latest season, fans are eager to discover what role Streep will take on.
Gomez had teased viewers with the news of the Academy Awards winner's official acceptance into the third season in a clip posted some hours ago. The "Calm Down" hitmaker began by pointing the camera at Martin and Short and informing viewers that they were on set filming for the upcoming season.
She then pointed the camera at Andrea Martin as she said, "the gang's back. Yayyy," before asking, "Could this honestly get any better?" and turning to Rudd, who responded: "Well, I do think it could get a little bit better."
Upon Gomez pondering "why?" the three-time Oscar winner popped up from behind, offering to help her new cast mates with menial tasks like getting coffee for Short. "ONLY LEGENDS IN THE BUILDING," one viewer exclaimed as another noted, "meryl streep on the new season? i will be seated."
A third fan commented, "NOT MERLYL STEEP POPPING UP??? literally the most iconic cast!" and a fourth fawned, "Paul Rudd?? he's my crush? I already love the show…...now it's imperative for me to watch!!!"
Fans of the show have been giddy since Town & Country reiterated that the show was renewed for a follow-up season earlier this month. However, before Hulu officially announced it, Gomez inadvertently let it slip during a June 2022 interview when she discussed balancing her acting and music career. In her words:
"I finished season two, I did my cooking show, and now I'm gonna be in the studio until season three. So basically we're going to be just working on new music. Like I said, I couldn't do one or the other. I actually love both."
She had also posted a video online when the crew of true crime podcasters wrapped up season two, toasting "to a great season two," which Short echoed, prompting Martin to reply, "to a great season three... well... next year!"
Gomez has since divulged how much she loved and enjoyed playing the character, Mabel — who she realized she shared "similar traits" with, per The Blast. The "Ice Cream" singer added that she saw Martin and Short as her "crazy uncles," thanks to the former's talent of poking fun at himself and grabbing people's attention.
So far, the team has solved two murders that occurred inside their apartment building located in New York's Upper West Side. They have also received multiple awards nominations, winning a handful.
Some of their wins include the Hollywood Critics Association TV Awards for Best Actress in a Streaming Series (Gomez) and Best Actor in a Streaming Series (Short), the People's Choice Awards for The Comedy TV Star of 2021 (Gomez), and three Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards.
The Disney Child Star Failed A Detective Test During CrimeCon 2021
The Blast observed Gomez's openness regarding her crime-solving techniques for "Only Murders in The Building" during an interview with Seth Meyers. To that end, the actress recalled when she had attended CrimeCon, alongside her mother, Mandy Teefey, in September 2021.
During the crime event, the mother-daughter duo attempted to solve a cold murder case with the help of other amateur detectives and the authorities. Unfortunately, that was when Gomez learned that her onscreen skills were not transferable and accepted that her mom was better at it than she was.
At this point, the "Barney & Friends" alum told fans that if they had a case that needed solving, they should avoid bringing it to her. Despite that, the 30-year-old was glad to be part of the event, which she considered a "great" experience. Meanwhile, CrimeCon confirmed that Gomez and Teefey attended the event with an Instagram upload with the caption:
"We were honored to host @selenagomez and her mom @mandyteefey at CrowdSolve this weekend. They were perfect detectives who, along with hundreds of others, helped bring peace to the Sova family."
