Fans of the show know very little about the upcoming finale, but in the last episode of season 4, the villain Vecna almost successfully killed Max. However, Eleven (played by Millie Bobby Brown) managed to save her and by the end of the episode, she was in a coma.

While viewers believed that this was the original plan, the Duffer Brothers disclosed that they considered killing off the character entirely. However, they ended up keeping her in a coma as a key part of the final season.

In response to why she was in a coma, Matt Duffer said, "The fact that she's in a coma, I can't really get into the details, but it is important that she is."

He also added that she would have a "major effect on" the fifth season. "So it's not a, oh well, you know, a cheat. It's incredibly relevant to five."
