Snoop Dogg Says Dionne Warwick 'Out-Gangstered' Him, Criticized Rap Lyrics As Misogynistic

Rapper Snoop Dogg has earned many accolades in his almost three decades career as a musician. While he topped charts with singles like “Beautiful” and “Drop It Like It’s Hot,” some of his lyrics have triggered listeners and fellow artists, one of them being the iconic Dionne Warwick.

The 82-year-old disclosed during a sit-down that she once invited Snoop Dogg and other prominent artists for an intervention because she couldn’t handle their misogynistic lyrics.

The meeting, which intimidated and, according to Snoop Dogg, “out gangstered” him and his co-rappers, changed the 51-year-old’s life forever. Fans, in response to the revelation, were also proud of him for adhering to her advice.

The recent CNN documentary “Dionne Warwick: Don’t Make Me Over” revealed that Warwick asked Snoop Dogg, Suge Knight and other rappers to meet with her at 7 am. Nevertheless, she scared them so much that they arrived eight minutes earlier.

Recounting how he felt, Snoop Dogg said, “We were kind of, like, scared and shook up.” While they were rich and famous, they still respected her a lot. “We’re powerful right now, but she’s been powerful forever.” He added, “Thirty-something years in the game, in the big home with a lot of money and success.”

The “Young, Wild and Free” rapper also recalled that Warwick asked them to call her a “b**ch” during the meeting since they always made such reference to women in their songs and music videos. Snoop Dogg was stunned since he believed he’d passed the stage of criticism. He said, “She was checking me at a time when I thought we couldn’t be checked.”

He continued, “We were the most gangsta as you could be, but that day at Dionne Warwick’s house, I believe we got out-gangstered that day.” After calling out the rappers at the time, the “Walk On By” singer then left a word of advice for them.

The “That’s What Friends Are For” singer remembered advising Snoop Dogg and his friends to use less disrespectful and degrading words in their lyrics. She also recalled telling them how disappointed and worried she was, especially since they would all have daughters someday.

Warwick said per CNN, “You guys are all going to grow up. You’re going to have families. You’re going to have children.” She continued, “You’re going to have little girls, and one day that little girl is going to look at you and say, ‘Daddy, did you really say that? Is that really you?’ What are you going to say?”

While it was an unexpected and intense meeting, Snoop Dogg admitted that it inspired him to change how he thought about music and wrote lyrics. He reflected on himself and promised to make uplifting and respectful music. “I made it a point to put records of joy – me uplifting everybody and nobody dying and everybody living,” he noted.

The singer then revealed that his 1996 album “Tha Doggfather” marked the beginning of his change as he considered Warwick’s advice when he wrote the project’s lyrics. Furthermore, the star thanked Warwick for the meeting and noted that he wanted to make her “proud.” He said, “Dionne, I hope I became the jewel that you saw when I was the little, dirty rock that was in your house.”

When asked how the meeting went, Warwick indicated that she was ecstatic about her decision to ask the artists for an appointment. She also explained that they seemed to pay attention to her words and heed her advice. “They all showed up, and, yeah, it did work,” Warwick said. “I think what it was was that they needed to hear me.

In response to the story, many supporters showed how much they loved the interactions on social media. They also noted how proud they were of Warwick for fighting and using her power and influence to defend women. Similarly, fans applauded Snoop Dogg for respecting Warwick enough to take the advice.
