Some months ago, it looked like Henry Cavill was all good and ready to come back to once again don the cape as Big Blue and play Superman on the big screen once again. However, James Gunn poured a bucket of cold water over those plans as he announced a new "Superman" movie reboot, which won't star Cavill. Instead, it looks like the actor will be moving on to a new franchise, which is a new live-action series adaptation of the "Warhammer 40,000" miniature tabletop RPG and franchise.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Amazon is currently in final talks to land the media rights to the Games Workshop franchise. The television project would presumably star and be executive-produced by Cavill.

The streaming and online commerce giant has reportedly been in negotiations with Games Workshop for months, including fending off rival companies who have been pursuing the media rights to the popular franchise.

The show does not have any writers or showrunners attached. Vertigo Entertainment would also be onboard to executive produce the show with Cavill.

Games Workshop first launched "Warhammer" back in 1987. It has since become the most popular miniature wargame in the world. The franchise has also inspired by many video game spinoffs in the digital realm.

"Warhammer 40,000" is set 40,000 years in the future. Human civilization has stopped progressing and is embroiled in a neverending war with aliens, magical beings, gods, demons, and orks all waging war for dominion in a theological class system. The human faction is the militaristic Imperium of Man. The Necron are skeleton-like androids, and also the elvish race the Aeldari, along with the hilarious Orks.

Earlier in October, Cavill had announced his return to the role of Superman after appearing in a cameo scene in DC's "Black Adam." However, after James Gunn and Peter Safran were named as the new co-heads of DC Films, it looks like Warner Bros. Discovery has once again opted to shift course on the DC Universe.

Cavill had also announced his exit from the popular dark fantasy series, "The Witcher," before his Superman announcement. Season 3 of the hit Netflix series will be his last on the show. Liam Hemsworth will replace Cavill as Geralt of Rivia on the show starting with Season 4. Ironically, it now appears that Cavill is gone from Superman just after leaving "The Witcher" and appeared to be making a glorious homecoming to the role.

Cavill is a longtime gamer and noted fan of the "Warhammer" franchise. He even paints his own miniature figures. The project is still in its early stages, and Amazon has not yet closed the deal, so any project would still be in its earliest development stages. That means it could still be a while before any show debuts on Amazon Prime Video, if at all.

Talk of a live-action adaptation of "Warhammer 40K" first surfaced back in 2019. That take involved Big Light Productions and "The Man in the High Castle" creator Frank Spotnitz. However, that version, entitled "Eisenhorn." It's yet to get off the ground.

If Cavill's version with "Vertigo Entertainment" gets made, it would be the first official live-action adaptation of the franchise.
