Meghan Markle Was Excluded From The Sandringham Summit
The second volume of "Harry & Meghan" was just released, and the couple opened up about the Sandringham Summit conducted after they decided to step back as senior royals. Harry revealed that after announcing their decision to the family, he was called to a meeting by the late Queen Elizabeth.
The father of two explained that he had emailed three of the most senior private secretaries to set up a meeting to analyze the situation properly, but it was rejected. A day was finally set for the meeting in Sandringham after Markle left for Canada.
Markle said, "Imagine a conversation, a roundtable discussion about the future of your life. When the stakes are this high. And you, as the mom and the wife and the target, in many regards, aren't invited to have a seat at the table." Harry claimed the meeting was clearly planned for a day the former actress was unavailable.
Prince William Screamed At Prince Harry
According to Harry, the meeting was approximately 90 minutes long, and he was presented with five options from the royal family. "I went in with the same proposal that we'd already made publicly. But once I got there, I was given five options. One being all in no change, five being all out," the Duke recalled.
Harry revealed that he chose the third option, which was basically "half in, half out," meaning they could maintain their careers while serving the Queen. The decision apparently provoked an unexpected reaction from the entire family, one of which was Williams screaming at him.
"It became very clear very quickly that that goal was not up for discussion or debate," Harry said per People. "It was terrifying to have my brother scream and shout at me, and my father say things that simply weren't true, and my grandmother quietly sit there and sort of take it all in."
Prince Harry Opens Up On The 'Wedge' Between Him And Prince William
Harry explained that from the point of view of the family, particularly the late Queen, her ultimate responsibility was to the institution rather than her family. "People around her telling her, by the way, that proposal or these two doing 'xyz' is going to be seen as an attack on the institution, then she's going to on the advice that she's given. That was really hard," he continued.
The meeting reportedly ended without any concrete action plan. Harry revealed it was likely that from their end, they could not see the issues the couple faced at the time and how being in the institution had caused them considerable pain.
The Duke of Sussex also mentioned his current relationship with his brother, Williams, and how the issue had created a wedge between them. "The saddest part of it was this wedge created between myself and my brother so that he's now on the institution's side," Harry said.
The royal continued, per People, "Part of that I get, I understand, right, that's his inheritance. So to some extent, it's already ingrained in him that part of his responsibility is the survivability and continuation of this institution."
The Late Queen Announced Prince Harry And Meghan Markle's Decision
After the Sandringham Summit concluded, Queen Elizabeth issued a statement, revealing that after deliberation with the members of the royal family, Harry and Meghan had decided to step down. "Today, my family had very constructive discussions on the future of my grandson and his family," the late Monarch said.
"My family and I are entirely supportive of Harry and Meghan's desire to create a new life as a young family. Although we would have preferred them to remain full-time working Members of the Royal Family, we respect and understand their wish to live a more independent life as a family while remaining a valued part of my family," she continued.
Queen Elizabeth further revealed that the couple had mentioned that they could do without public funding in their new lives and were given a transition period where they spent time in both the U.K and Canada.
After relocating to California, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex made their final rounds as royals in March 2020. In February 2021, the Palace announced they would not reclaim their senior royal positions.
