Christmas came a little early for some Bay Area families who attended the 10th annual "Christmas with the Curry's" event in Oakland earlier this week. NBA star Stephen Curry and his wife Ayesha Curry, along with their Eat. Learn. Play. Foundation, hosted a winter wonderland event for 500 families in need.
"Christmas With The Curry's" Winter Wonderland Event Brought Christmas To 500 Bay Area Families
The event included festive fun, gifts, meals, and great memories for families who may need some assistance during the holiday season. There were more than 2,000 people in attendance for the event that was held at Bridge Yard. There was ice skating, a free book fair, winter-themed games, ornament and cookie decorating, real snowball toss, and photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus. Thanks to the help of sponsors, each family received gifts, including a new laptop, gift cards, meal kits, toys, clothes and more.
During an interview with NBC Bay Area, Ayesha explained what she takes away from the experience of seeing the happy families during the event. "I think it's just great to be able to be that village for people that need it in that moment," she said. "Everybody at some point needs a village, it takes a village to raise a family and raise a child."
Stephen discussed the impact he has on kids off the basketball court. "It's still kind of surreal because basketball has opened up so many doors and allowed the platform to impact the next generation in a lot of different ways," he said.
When asked what he hopes to take away from the experience of the "Christmas with the Curry's" event, Stephen responded, "Just joy and fun, just the thought that there's somebody looking out for you. And these moments they'll hopefully remember for a long time, throughout the year when there's some down days, times they lack a little bit of confidence. They can go back to today to think that small, short conversation, that interaction, and understand that there's somebody that believes in you."
