Dua Lipa is officially a dual citizen! The “Levitating” singer was finally able to honor her Albanian heritage in the sweetest way possible!
Over the weekend, Lipa achieved a huge milestone as regards the Southeastern European nation, and she took to Instagram to shout it from the rooftop — something she usually does when it comes to Albania.
Dua Lipa Gets Awarded Albania Citizenship By President
On Sunday, the “One Kiss” singer broke the news on Instagram that she is now officially an Albanian citizen. She was gifted the highest privilege by none other than the leader of the country President Bajram Begaj and mayor Erion Veliaj. For the ceremony, Lipa looked her best in a blue maxi dress with a plaid design and flare sleeves.
The gorgeous midi dress featured ruched details at the bust and mid-riff area, as well as a stylish neck cut. She paired the lovely ensemble with a pair of knee-high white boots and accessorized with a stylish knitted bag also in white. The Grammy-winning artiste styled her luscious black tresses into a simple straight hairdo, styled into a center part, cascading elegantly down her shoulders.
In the carousel of photos shared by the newest Albanian in town, the 27-year-old happily and proudly signed her declaration oath form after it was read to her by the mayor. After she finished, cheers and claps erupted, and Lipa smiled so proudly, signifying her joy at achieving this feat.
In the post accompanying caption, she wrote, “🇦🇱👐🏼 Thank you President Bajram Begaj and Mayor @erionveliaj for this honour ~ got my Albanian citizenship!!” Liao concluded her post, adding, “faleminderit, po ndihem shume krenare 🇦🇱❤️👐🏼,” which translates to “thank you, I am feeling very proud.”
In no time, her comments section was filled with congratulatory messages from fans and colleagues alike. Mayor Veliaj shared photos from the swearing-in ceremony on Instagram and had nothing but praises for the rising singer.
“Welcome to #TeamAlbania @dualipa ❤️🇦🇱. Happy that today, at the citizenship swearing-in ceremony 🇦🇱, I had the pleasure of meeting a girl like you, noble, talented and proud of her roots⭐️,” he wrote.
A day after the news, Lipa dropped an even bigger announcement for her fans in Albania. Dressed in a striking knitted black dress and jacket outfit while holding the Albanian flag high and proud, she informed them, “110 YEARS OF INDEPENDENCE 🇦🇱 so happy to be in Tirana, Albania ~ as the newest citizen 😝 to perform for you all tonight ~ THE FINAL FUTURE NOSTALGIA SHOW 🇦🇱❤️👐🏼 menxi po pres me ju paaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
In the space of just four hours, the post garnered over 1 million likes from excited fans.
What Is Dua Lipa’s Relationship With Albania?
While the “Cold Heart” songstress was born in London and is globally known as an English singer, her real roots stem from Albania as she was born to Kosovar-Albanian parents who fled the country because of conflict and political instability in the Balkans.
Despite leaving her home, Lipa was familiarized with her Albanian heritage by her parents, and this is evident in how she proudly references her home country in her music, on social media, and even during interviews with the press.
The singer, who shares a close bond with her family, co-founded the Sunny Hill Foundation with her dad Dukagjin Lipa to help charities and financially assist cultural events in Kosovo. She often travels to the nation for family vacations from time to time.
Speaking about her shared heritage as both an Albanian and a Briton, Lipa often revealed that she believes she has the best of both worlds. She once said in an interview, “I feel very proud to be from both places, and I feel like I represent both places. In Kosovo, the second that you do something and you’re making these moves around the world, you’re instantly a key person there.”
In August, Lipa was made an Honorary Ambassador of Kosovo, and in November, she announced on social media that the last show of her Future Nostalgia tour would take place in none other than Albania.
