According to the FDA, hyperbaric oxygen therapy “involves breathing 100% (pure) oxygen while in a special space called a hyperbaric chamber. The air pressure inside is raised to a level that is higher than normal air pressure. The increased air pressure in the chamber helps the lungs collect more oxygen. Getting more oxygen to the tissues that need it can help the body heal and fight certain infections.”

New video footage shows Leno’s left arm wrapped in a white bandage up to his elbow while his entire right hand is wrapped up. His face is entirely wrapped in gauze.

Leno can be seen wearing a blue hospital gown and being chatty with his nurse attendant. He was animated and moving his hands in circular motion.

Inside Edition got an exclusive look into Leno’s recovery and spoke to his doctor.

Leno’s doctor, Dr. Peter Grossman, spoke to IE and told them his “injuries are serious,” but he’s in “good condition.”

Dr. Grossman is the lead doctor at the famous Grossman Burn Center West Hills Hospital.

The TV personality did have to undergo a “grafting procedure” to replace areas of burned off skin. Dr. Grossman explained he’s had skin grafts that are not his own, meaning skin the hospital had in its skin bank from donor skin.

A skin graft is a patch of skin that is removed by surgery from one area of the body and transplanted, or attached, to another area, according to Mount Sinai.

“His injuries are serious, his condition is good,” Dr. Grossman said, adding that Leno “did well” during the first surgery.

Fortunately, the car enthusiast is in “good spirits.” He’s up walking around and even cracking jokes, according to his doctor. This week, he helped pass out cookies to patients in the burn center.

Leno will undergo another medical procedure this week.

The former ‘Tonight Show’ host sustained the injuries after an explosion occurred while working on a clogged fuel line on his 1907 White Steam car.

The star of the popular YouTube channel “Jay Leno’s Garage” has previously revealed he owns approximately 181 cars and 160 motorcycles in his Burbank home.

Gasoline got onto Leno’s face and hands, and at the same time a fuel leak and spark occurred igniting an explosion. This caused the comedian to go up into flames.

According to TMZ, Leno’s life was saved by his friend Dave who immediately jumped on the comedian and put out the flames.

The burns did not affect his eyes or ears, thankfully.

Dr. Grossman believes Leno will have scarring for the foreseeable future, but the hope is it will be minimal or nonexistent in the future. He also believes Leno will be able to return to work at some point.

“As I’m getting to learn about Jay, I don’t think it’s going to be months. I think he’s the type of guy who is just going to move forward,” Dr. Grossman reassured.
