Remembering His Own 'Shame' Over Food Insecurity

Citing hwn background, Malik addressed the letter to the Prime Minister, talking about how as a child growing up in Bradford, he too relied on the FSM (free school meal) and knows "what shame feels like." Wrote the 29-year-old, "I personally experienced the stigma surrounding food insecurity. My hope is that in writing this letter we can all ensure that no child ever has to experience this hunger and stigma again as my experience is not unique; it is a struggle that many children in England are sadly going through right now."

He urged Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to provide a free meal to all children living in the UK in poverty, further saying, "These children are suffering from lack of concentration, some even resorting to stealing food from school canteens because they are so hungry but can't afford to buy lunch. They are also feeling shame which is directly impacting their physical and mental health."

With an estimated 800,000 children living in poverty in the UK, Malik urged the administration to be generous, and there were plenty on Instagram happy to share their stories with everyone to back Malik.

Said one Instagram user, "I grew up in a single-parent household on a council estate, without the free meals I'd have probably gone hungry some days. I'm now, still very working class, but in a well-paid job and give back to those where and when I can. For those who can, I recommend using Olio to donate unwanted food to local communities or simply donating to food banks."

Another agreed as well, "I also relied on FSM growing up. Looking back, we relied on those. I couldn't get FSM for a few years and I went to school hungry. All primary school kids should be entitled to FSM. Not just kids on universal credit."

Recently, Malik became an ambassador for the Food Foundation, especially working on the Feed the Future campaign, for which he has also been urging people to write to their MPs and ask the government to make a change.

In the letter, Malik requests Sunak to use the government's November budget "to extend the threshold for free school meals to include young people from families on universal credit." Along with Mailk, footballer Marcus Rashford and celebrity chef Jamie Oliver are also part of the Food Foundation.
