Singer Britney Spears might not be able to talk her way out of this one.
On Tuesday night, the "Oops!...I Did It Again" singer went off against women who don't "flaunt" their bodies yet criticize those that do. Many fans felt that the 40-year-old pop star was calling out Selena Gomez, especially with the mention of her "Ice Cream" music video.
Even though Britney took to Instagram on Wednesday night to say that she was not talking about the "Only Murders In The Building" actress at all, many fans accused her of "backtracking" and creating a "revisionist history."
Britney Spears Insists Her Deleted Post Was NOT About Selena Gomez
On Tuesday, Britney took to Instagram to share a photo of her in a red bikini and posted the following caption:
Don’t you just love the nerve of women who stand firmly getting awards and speak on their beliefs about not showing their bodies on instagram ???!!!!! They say “This is NOT something I would do” yet those women are the very ones who get 4 million dollar budget videos made about sucking and licking on homemade ice cream !!!! These other girls have nothing but beautiful bodies !!!! Who cares if the flaunt it ??? THEY SHOULD !!! So the next time I see someone with a big budget video sucking on lollipops yet giving righteous speeches shaming other women for exposing their bodies, I would like to tell those people don’t be a hypocrite as you suck on your lollipop having HUGE budget dreams … why would you stand firmly against girls getting attention JUST LIKE YOU and they have absolutely nothing ????
However, after she started facing backlash from fans for calling out Selena Gomez, Britney deleted the caption and replaced the above comment with three red heart emojis. The "Hold Me Closer" singer took to Instagram again on Wednesday night to post a long message explaining that she wasn't talking about Selena at all.
Instagram | Britney SpearsThe “Toxic” singer began her post by saying that “women judging other women” is a subject that “all women have had to deal with.” She said that she was not talking about Selena at all, but a time earlier in her career when men would discuss her body in interviews.
Although many fans thought Britney’s original caption was a reference to Selena’s “Ice Cream,” music video, Britney clarified that she was actually thinking about Kelis’ “Milkshake” music video when she wrote her original caption.
Britney went on to say, “I empower women to express their bodies however they choose.”
“I apology for my ignorance, but I didn’t even see the music video for Ice Cream that Selena Gomez, who I genuinely look up to and have so much respect for had made,” she wrote, joking that she is not “a part of the in crowd.”
Selena Gomez had attended Britney’s June wedding to Iranian actor Sam Asghari. In the post, Britney wrote, “I got to be surprised by her on my wedding day and was completely in awe of her !!!”
She said that “Bad Liar” is her favorite song from Selena and the two got to sing it together at her wedding. “I would like to tell Selena which she’s probably not even aware of trash news that her music has gotten me through lots,” she wrote, thanking her again for “making my dreams come true by coming to my wedding.”
Britney said that Selena Gomez was the “one person I have always wanted to meet and my dream came true and I will not forget it!!!”
She went on to say that Selena probably “isn’t even aware of this nonsense” before going on to tell “other women to lift each other up,” adding, “Never judge others by the way they express their bodies.”
She concluded her post by saying, “The judgments that the media has always done with me … through someone’s pain of feeling either too big, too small, too tall, too short, broken-hearted or bullied all create their own way to express themselves … they do this because those are the times they find their true inner self and THAT’S when the best art is created.”
Fans Are Divided Over Britney's 'Non-Apology' and 'Backpedaling' Comments
In the caption, Britney dropped three “🥛🥛🥛” emojis. She was quick to receive support from her assistant, Vicky T, who wrote, “🙌🙌🙌 this is what I thought when I saw your post! You have always been so encouraging to me to embrace whatever size I am and anyway I wanna show or not show my body. Always made me feel accepted. ❤️.”
However, fans weren’t so quick to accept her “non-apology,” with one user commenting, “Well that’s a non-apology if I’ve ever seen one.” Another follower agreed, adding, “Her post was definitely about Selena & now she’s backpedaling. Used to be such a fan of you but lately all the hate and negativity you spread has become too much.”
Still, other fans did accept her apology. One fan wrote, “Super sweet. Didn’t have to clarify but cared that she didn’t offend a friend. Media really needs to stop assuming, guessing, or insinuating!” Another added, “That’s right Britney !!!! Don’t focus on the haters trying to look for drama !!!”
However, some followers had a different question. “Why isn’t she able to call her friend Selena Gomez? Why are they [not] able to contact each other? This just adds so many more questions.”
