Alongside having a chronic alcohol addiction, Perry also dabbled into opioids. In the interview, he admitted that the constant use of both substances wreaked havoc on his body. He also shared that the habit stopped him from making the best use of the fame and success he had garnered from starring in "Friends."

Perry reflected in the interview, "At the time I should have been the toast of the town, I was in a dark room meeting nothing but drug dealers and completely alone."

Further details about the actor's addiction struggle can be seen in his upcoming memoir, Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing, which hits the bookshelves on November 1, 2022.

Ahead of the book's release, the actor spoke with People, reiterating that the purpose of coming out now was to give people the opportunity to learn from his ordeal. He also explained why he waited so long to tell his story despite being sober for a while.

"I wanted to share when I was safe from going into the dark side of everything again," the actor told the publication for their latest cover story. "I had to wait until I was pretty safely sober — and away from the active disease of alcoholism and addiction — to write it all down. And the main thing was, I was pretty certain that it would help people."

Some of the terrible lows Perry penned in his book include how his addiction caused him to drop to 128 pounds. At the time, he was popping 55 tablets of Vicodin a day while also consuming a considerable amount of alcohol.

His drug use ultimately caused a gastrointestinal perforation that caused him to be admitted into the ICU with barely a two percent chance of survival. The actor was in a coma for two weeks and another five months in the hospital. In addition, he had used a colostomy bag for nine months to collect fecal matter from his body.

Luckily for the actor, he was able to recover from the bodily damage the substance abuse caused him.

"I'm pretty healthy now," Perry told People. "I've got to not go to the gym much more, because I don't want to only be able to play superheroes. But no, I'm a pretty healthy guy right now."
