4 Things You Should Know About ‘Modern Family’ Star, Sarah Hyland

You know her for her role in Modern Family, but Sarah Hyland has been in the entertainment industry ever since she was a child. That said, her breakout role was when she was cast in the popular sitcom.

Modern Family, which just wrapped their final episode, first aired in 2009. Almost a decade ago! And while you might always think of her as Haley Dunphey, Hyland is much more than a character. The 29-year-old can act, sing, and even dance.

Here are four things you probably didn’t know about Sarah Hyland:

Hyland didn’t choose the entertainment industry on a whim, she was born into an acting family.

Her father, Edward James Hyland, is an actor best known for his roles in the movie, Bridge of Spies and the The Happening. Her mother, Melissa Canaday, has starred in short films like Float. Her brother, Ian Hyland, made appearances in Spanglish, The Ex, and The Skeleton Twins.

It’s no surprise Sarah was drawn to the world of acting and was able to become a household name!

Despite being a celebrity, Sarah Hyland hasn’t had an easy life. Ever since she was young, she’s suffered from kidney dysplasia. The condition was so serious, her father had to give her a kidney transplant in 2012. Unfortunately, the kidney failed a few years later, which led to her second transplant; which her brother Ian donated.

Hyland’s weight suffered because of the medication she needed to keep her from rejecting the kidney. Sometimes, she was forced to stay in bed.

In an interview with Ellen DeGeneres, Sarah admitted she contemplated suicide.

“I was very, very, very close. I would write letters in my head to loved ones — of why I did it, my reasoning behind it, how it’s nobody’s fault. And I didn’t want to write it down on paper because I didn’t want anyone to find it. … I didn’t want anyone to know I was that close because if I knew, they would try to persuade me," Hyland admitted.

Not only can Hyland act, but she’s a trained dancer and singer. She attended the Professional Performing Arts School in Manhattan, New York. While there, she studied acting, dancing, and singing.

Sarah hasn’t released her own album, but she has performed in several YouTube videos where she covers popular songs.

Sarah Hyland has been engaged to her long-term boyfriend, Wells Adams since 2019, after “meeting” via social media. Adams, who’s a well-known radio host/podcaster, is best known for being a member of the Bachelor franchise.

The pair confirmed their relationship in 2017, after months of speculation. And in 2018, Hyland told Jimmy Kimmel, "He slid into my DMs.” And she liked that!

She admitted to telling Adams, "This is really awesome. You’re being very forward and it’s sexy and not aggressive, but very confident and sexy."

That same year, Wells relocated to Los Angeles and moved in with Hyland. From there, their relationship only became stronger. Now, we’re just waiting on the wedding!
