Disney Channel’s "High School Musical" (2006) almost instantly became a hit film, even having gone on to release two sequels — "High School Musical 2" (2007) and "High School Musical 3" (2008).
Currently, Disney+ is streaming a spin-off series, "High School Musical: The Musical: The Series", even seeing one original "High School Musical" member return to the screen -- Corbin Bleu (Chad Danforth).
With Bleu's return to the franchise, many fans were hoping to see others come back for a reunion as well, including Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens -- and it looks that may happen as the showrunner has spoken out, saying they are actively working on it!
"High School Musical" Reunion Is In The Works
The popular "High School Musical" franchise starred Zac Efron (Troy Bolton), Vanessa Hudgens (Gabriella Montez), Corbin Bleu (Chad Danforth), Monique Coleman (Taylor McKessie), Ashley Tisdale (Sharpay Evans), and Lucas Grabiel (Ryan Evans).
However, the cast has not been together since the third film, "High School Musical 3," which debuted in 2008. But with original cast member Corbin Bleu returning to the franchise in the third season of the Disney+ original series, "High School Musical: The Musical: The Series," the showrunner feels a reunion with all members is possible.
"High School Musical" showrunner Tim Federle recently spoke to TVLine on Bleu's return to the franchise. "Corbin had such a good time this season, he said, 'If you ever want me to come back, just know this has been so much fun,'" Federle explained.
The showrunner went on to explain how Bleu's return had him thinking about bringing back the rest of the original cast -- Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, Monique Coleman, and Lucus Grabiel, back into the story. "So that sort of inspired me to think, 'What if our kids went back to school and had to be extras in a movie?' Our show is so absurdly meta, it's just going to turn into Inception one day. We're really excited," he said.
"I'm going to chalk that up to being a remarkable coincidence, but we'd love to get Zac and Vanessa and all of them back, so we're actively working on that right now," the "High School Musical" showrunner continued.
"High School Musical: The Musical: The Series" has already been renewed for a fourth season on Disney+. Seasons one-three are currently streaming on Disney+, along with the three "High School Musical" films.
Zac Efron Is Open To "High School Musical" Reunion
Fans of "High School Musical" are hopeful now that Tim Federle says he is actively working on a reunion because we also know "High School Musical" star Zac Efron is already on board for a reunion.
In previous interview with E! News promoting Efron’s film "Firestarter", the 34-year-old was asked if he was open to a "High School Musical" reboot or a fourth film, to which Efron said, “Of course. I mean to have an opportunity in any form to go back and work with that team would be so amazing. My heart is still there. That would be incredible. I hope it happens.”
