According to Page Six, Ward's husband, Terry Baxter, encouraged her to film scenes with other men after her transition into adult entertainment.

“He saw a truth in me that I wasn’t going to cross the boundary of … getting with guys, basically,” Ward, 45, told the outlet.

Ward admitted that she got her start by creating explicit content with other girls, admitted, “The girl stuff, I’ve had a lot of fun with girls. That wasn’t really a bother at all to [Baxter]. A lot of guys like that."

Baxter, 47, is a real estate agent located in the Los Angeles area. Before she got started in adult entertainment, her husband used to help record her early work. He was also present when she filmed her first hardcore porn sequence with another man.

“At the end of it, the first one we did, nothing bad had happened," she recalled. "It was a controlled situation. I got to live out a fantasy, then it was done and we went back to our lives. So I really think that it solidified our trust in each other and also his faith in me."

“I felt really uplifted by that," she added. "It’s more of a connection there.”

Ward went on to say that she felt confined by mainstream Hollywood, and was grateful that her husband supported her need to express herself.

“So many men especially, women too, are very jealous and want to keep their partner in a box," she said. "And he knows that I had been in a box for so long in Hollywood."

“[My husband] really saw that if he held me back from any of this, he would be the one now keeping me in a box," she continued. "And he knew how much that bothered me and how hard that was for so many years for me.”

“I was finally emerging and I was having fun and I was successful, so he didn’t want to stop my trajectory," she added. "And I mean, hey, it went better than I could ever have imagined.”

Not only has Ward won an AVN Award, but she is also one of the highest-paid women working in the adult film industry today.

Maitland Ward also explained that she wrote her novel to help de-stigmatize the conversation about the industry.

“I just hope … my story helps de-stigmatize [sex work],” she said, adding, "It’s unfortunate that there are still stigmas attached. People always say that porn ruins people’s lives and that’s really not true because a lot of girls — and people — come into porn where it’s a safe haven for them."

"If they feel other than or they feel they have to hide themselves sexually, they can find a place with people who are like them, who support them and they can live out their truth,” she added.

Instead, she believes that ignominy often leads to the downfall of many adult stars, not the industry itself.

“They’re ostracized. The stigma, that’s really what tears people apart," she said.  "I believe it gets them into heavy drugs or it drives them to terrible things like depression and suicide."

“The bad things you hear about is because they’re so stigmatized in the public," she added.

Ward believes that the “freedom to be able to express ourselves sexually” on film is more important than what some critics might think.

“These girls make so much money and they save up, a lot of them, for college, they buy houses. I know several porn stars who have made so much money and they invest in properties,” she said. “More than anything, it’s empowering. I know it has been for me.”
