Leonardo DiCaprio Has Been Given The Green Light To Join 'Squid Game'

Due to the instant success of the Netflix series "Squid Game", the streaming company has already confirmed a season two, as well as a new reality series titled “Squid Game: The Challenge,” based on the competition in “Squid Game”.

Although not many details have been released regarding season two of the hit Netflix show, the director of "Squid Game" is coming forward and saying he would be open to one specific Hollywood actor being involved -- none other than Leonardo DiCaprio.

"Squid Game" director Hwang Dong-hyuk attended a media conference celebrating the Netflix show's Emmy wins on September 16, where he revealed that the upcoming season will still be set in Korea, and although "there will be no known Hollywood actor in season two," there's always the possibility of something changing for the future. "That's not in the plan and if the stage changes, maybe in season three," Dong-hyuk said according to Deadline.

And if the path does change, and the creators do begin looking to cast a Hollywood star, Dong-hyuk has someone very specific in mind. "Leonardo DiCaprio did say he's a big fan of Squid Game," he said, "so maybe if time or chances allow, we can ask him to join the games. We have already joked about that."

Although there has been no offer given to DiCaprio, or no word on if DiCaprio would even be interested, there is plenty of time for the creators and actor to make a decision as season two isn't expected to hit Netflix until 2024. This could mean that perhaps ideas and pathways could change before then, and we could see the "Titanic" actor star in "Squid Game".

Last year, Netflix’s “Squid Game” took over as it quickly jumped to number one on the streaming platform’s Top 10 lists in 94 countries. According to reports, “Squid Game” was viewed by over 111 million accounts at launch, surpassing “Bridgerton” which had an audience of 82 million households within its first 28 days.

The Netflix series, “Squid Game” stars Lee Jung-Jae as Seong Gi-hun, HoYeon Jung as Kang Sae-byeok, Lee Yoo-Mi as Ji-Yeong, Park Hae-soo as Cho Sang-Woo, and more. Netflix describes the series as:

“Hundreds of cash-strapped players accept a strange invitation to compete in children’s games. Inside, a tempting prize awaits — with deadly high stakes.”

At this year's Emmys, “Squid Game” made history as the Netflix show was nominated for 16 Emmys and won six, including Hwang taking home the Emmy for best directing for a drama series for the pilot episode, “Red Light, Green Light,” and “Squid Game” star Lee Jung-Jae who became the first Asian actor ever to win the best actor in a drama.

The first season of "Squid Game" is streaming now on Netflix with season two expected to debut on Netflix sometime in 2024.
