Did you know there was a time when Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade weren’t together?

Prior to his relationship with the “Bring It On” star, Wade was married to Siohvaughn Funches for eight years.

The two were high school sweethearts and married in 2002. They share two children; Zaire and Zaya — who recently came out as transgender.

Wade and Funches separated in 2007, and their divorce (which was more like a battle) made headlines.

But now that the dust has settled and time has passed, one can’t help but wonder what exactly happened during their relationship. And what's become of Ms. Funches?

Wade and Funches met while attending Harold L. Richards High School in Illinois. They married in 2002, after welcoming their first child.

About a year after they were married, Dwyane was selected to play for the Miami Heat. A few years later, Wade filed for divorce. The couple separated in 2007, about a month after welcoming Zion, who now goes by Zaya.

It took years for their divorce to be finalized. At one point, Wade sued Funches for falsely claiming he abused the children (an allegation she eventually took back).

In addition to that allegation, Funches accused Wade of cheating on her and leaving the family broke. Dwyane claimed she was mentally unstable.

In 2011, Dwyane was awarded sole custody of both children. In 2012, Siohvaughn was arrested for trying to abduct their children (Like we said, messy!)

After her arrest, Siohvaughn was ordered to undergo a mental evaluation. During the divorce proceedings, Wade started dating Gabrielle.

Their divorce settlement was reached in 2013, with Wade paying Funches $5 million. She also walked away with their mansion and four cars.

Dwyane and Gabrielle started dating in 2008 and briefly split-up in 2013.

During their breakup, Wade fathered a child with Aja Metoyer. But that didn’t seem to deter Union because the two got engaged a year later, and married in 2014 in Miami.

In 2018, they welcomed a child via a surrogate.

The couple raises their blended family together. And recently made headlines for their outspoken acceptance of their 12-year-old transgender daughter, Zaya.

When speaking on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," Wade shared, “When our child comes home with a question, when our child comes home with an issue, when our child comes home with anything, it's our job as parents to listen to that, to give them the best information that we can, the best feedback that we can,” he explained. "And that doesn't change because sexuality is now involved in it."

Since the divorce, Siohvaughn has become an author. She wrote “The True Story for God’s Glory,” and “You Gotta Let God Finish!”

She’s also a motivational speaker and has a podcast that shares tools for living a better life.

Funches even founded a nonprofit, A Woman’s Worth Foundation, Inc., that helps survivors of domestic violence.

According to her LinkedIn, she has a Doctorate in Theology, as well as many other accolades.

So clearly, Ms. Funches didn’t let the divorce get her down for too long. Good for you, girl!
