Heavy Smoke Conditions Made It Difficult To Access Anne Heche's Car
NBC News obtained recordings of the conversation of firefighters who responded to the scene of Heche's car crash. The footage showed how the severe fire and smoke circumstances made it more challenging to rescue Heche from her burning car and that it took 45 minutes before they could start rescue efforts.
"Given the heavy fire and smoke conditions, it wasn't that you could clearly see into the vehicle or clearly be able to access it," a representative of the Los Angeles police department told the publication.
"Heavy smoke conditions, heavy fire conditions, which makes it very difficult for us to just see each other on the inside of a working structure fire," he added.
According to the recordings, the first fire truck on the scene radioed that an unknown individual was stuck in the car that had slammed into the house. Minutes later, it was reported that another person was rescued from the burning structure. While the person who had been pulled from the house could be treated right away by paramedics, it was difficult to reach Heche, who had not yet been identified at the time.
Anne Heche's Rescue Took 65 Minutes
The tapes also detailed that Heche was found on the floorboard and could not be moved immediately since the automobile had plowed into the structure. The firefighters ultimately used a heavy-duty tow truck to bring out the wrecked vehicle before they could rescue the actress.
The entire process took 65minutes as the firefighters had to first "confine and fully extinguish the stubborn flames within the heavily damaged structure" before they could access Heche's vehicle.
"We have one patient in the auto, being assessed, about to be loaded up on the gurney for transport," a firefighter said, per the recordings.
After being accessed, Heche was rushed to the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center the later moved to the Grossman Burn Center at West Hills Hospital for specialist care.
'Our Firefighters Were Doing Everything'
Since the incident, fans of Heche have wondered if things could have been done differently to save the actress. However, the fire department revealed in their report (per NBC) that the best possible effort was made to save Heche at the time.
"I would imagine, just based on some of the very experienced officers that were initiating the firefight, that they made the best effort they could to try to identify that someone was in the vehicle," the representative for the department said.
"Our firefighters were doing everything," he added.
Heche was taken off life support on August 14 after sustaining accident-related brain damage. While her death certificate officially has her date of death as August 11, she was kept alive so her organs could be donated per her desires.
Anne Heche Passed Away With No Will
Following her death, reports made the headlines that Heche had no will at the time of her demise and that her son Homer Laffoon, 20, had filed a suit in court to be made the custodian of her estate.
NBC News reported that the petition listed Heche's son with her ex-husband Coleman Lafoon and Atlas Heche Tupper, whom she shared with another former partner James Tupper as the only serving heirs of her estate.
Homer also requested that the court make him the guardian of his brother, who is a minor. At the time of the filing. Anne's personal property and annual income were listed as unknown, as details of her wealth can only be made open if the court grants the petition.
