'Anne with an E' Cancelled, Dalila Bela Surprised

CBC and Netflix partnered together, not only in creating Anne with an E, but also Alias Grace. Alias Grace was an Emmy-winning adaptation of Margaret Atwood's novel, of the same name. It debuted prior to Anne with an E and was the CBC and Netflix's first successful partnership.

Netflix also promoted other CBC programs, such as Schitt's Creek. There have always been tensions with CBC and Netflix working together, but hopefully, they can overcome those tensions, as Anne with an E really did draw a lot of attention.

The issue with the partnership, therein lies in Netflix's ability to evade the taxes a Canadian company would have paid in the same situation. Streaming services, such as Netflix, are not under an obligation to collect sales tax in Canada. Adittionally, a Canadaian company would be required to contribute 5% of their gross revenue total to the Canada Media Fund. But a company like Netflix, keeps it's entire bottom line.

Along with financial problems, Catherine Tate took the disagreement one step further, comparing Netflix's influence in Canada to that of the British Empire colonizers.

If the show had continued on, or if the show is saved, Dalila Bela believes that Mrs. Barry would support Diana in her path for higher education. She'd want Diana to continue that path, and find somebody who accepts her for who she is.

Fans would get to see Diana Barry as herself, more herself than past seasons, growing into herself and becoming a better person. Diana would go against everything that is expected of her, and she'd be a real rebel.

It is possible that the fact there is a high demand for CBC shows on Netflix, especially Anne with an E, that Netflix and CDC can find a way to work together, since Netflix does still contribute to the Canadian economy.

In a recent interview with Dalila Bela, she was as surprised about the show being ended, like the fans. Fans certainly did not see the cancellation coming, because there is so much more to the story. After all, in the book series, we see Anne grow up, get married and live her life. Why shouldn't the television series follow suit?

Someone thought it was a joke. Fans are just broken up about the cancellation, and are hoping that there is a way to continue to produce the series.

In an interview with MEA, Bela discusses the show's cancellation. When the show was filming there was not any talk of the show being cancelled. Bela is excited to pursue other prospects, but she did spend four years working on Anne with an E and it's a bittersweet end.

Hopefully Netflix and CBC can come to terms.
