Moviegoers everywhere were highly disappointed last month after Adam Sandler was snubbed for his dramatic turn in Uncut Gems, a gritty drama by the Safdie Brothers which saw Sandler in the role of a New York City jeweler addicted to gambling. In spite of the Oscar snub, Sandler seems undeterred and happy to keep moving forward with a brand new movie for Netflix entitled Hubie Halloween, which is produced by Sandler's Happy Madison company and written by Sandler and his frequent collaborator Tim Herlihy.

Hubie Halloween is a Halloween whodunit movie set in Salem, Massachusetts, the famous home of the Salem Witch Trials. It follows the story of a local community volunteer named Hubie Dubois (played by Sandler) who finds himself "at the center of a real murder case on Halloween night".

The film stars a long list of high-profile names, including Kevin James, Julie Bowen, Ray Liotta, Steve Buscemi, Shaquille O'Neal, and many others. It is directed by Steven Brill who previously worked with Sandler on films like Mr. Deeds and Little Nicky.

The movie appears to be a return to form for Sandler after his detour into dramatic territory with Uncut Gems. The story of a protagonist who is also "a figure of mockery for kids and adults alike" is reminiscent of many of Sandler's past comedies, which tend to center on eccentric, simpleminded characters rising to occasions of heroism, such as The Waterboy and Billy Madison. The inclusion in the filmmaking process of Sandler's past collaborators also promises to reintroduce some of Sandler's classic comic personality to the new film.

As for Sandler's own opinion on the upcoming movie? He hasn't said much, but many people are now looking back on a cryptic statement Sandler made on The Howard Stern show last year where he discussed his work with on Uncut Gems and voiced his desire to win an Oscar if he ever did get nominated. Sandler remarked of his potential for a nomination: "If I don’t get it, I’m going to f****g come back and do one again that is so bad on purpose just to make you all pay. That’s how I get them."

So is Hubie Halloween set to be Sandler's revenge movie against the Oscar snobs who spited him? Fans of Sandler's comedy can only hope so.

Netflix CCO has expressed excitement for the new Sandler project claiming “our members can’t get enough of him. They love his stories and his humor, as we saw with Murder Mystery. So I could not be more excited to extend our partnership with Adam". Sandler is currently in the midst of a four-movie deal with Netflix, and has previously produced and starred in movies such as Murder Mystery, Sandy Wexler, and The Ridiculous 6 for the streaming platform.
