On Thursday, CBS News reported that the social media sensation has been arrested by law enforcement on one charge of second-degree murder with a deadly weapon on Wednesday. In a statement, Hawaii county police said that they assisted U.S. Marshals Service as they arrested the 26-year-old model in Laupahoehoe, which is located on the Big Island. The arrest warrant had initially been issued by law enforcement officials in Miami-Dade County, Florida.
At this time, CBS News reports that she is being held at the East Hawaii Detention Center while she waits for her initial court appearance in Hilo District Court, which will occur later today.
Hawaii police provided no information on the details surrounding her arrest, but CBS Miami reported that Courtney is accused of fatally stabbing her boyfriend a few months ago.
Courtney Clenney uses the name Courtney Tailor on her various social media accounts, where she has more than two million followers.
Courtney Clenney's Defense Attorney Speaks Out
Many have been wondering why Courtney Clenney traveled from Florida to Hawaii. Her defense lawyer, Frank Prieto, told CBS Miami that she traveled to the Big Island while in rehabilitation for substance abuse and post-traumatic stress disorder.
"I'm completely shocked, especially since we were cooperating with the investigation and offered to voluntarily surrender her if she were charged," Prieto said in a statement. "We look forward to clearing her name in court."
Prieto claims that Courtney had kicked her boyfriend out of the apartment she was renting in Edgewater, Florida, one week before his death. He claims that Courtney had ended the relationship due to allegations of domestic abuse.
On the day of his death, Miami police had been summoned to the apartment to investigate a domestic violence call when they found Obumseli suffering from a knife wound. He passed away while officials rushed him to a hospital.
Attorney Claims Courtney Clenney Suffered Trauma From 'A Toxic Relationship'
Prieto said that Clenney and her boyfriend had been together for two years and described their relationship as "toxic," saying, "It was clearly a toxic relationship, (they) had their ups and downs and, unfortunately, it culminated with his death."
Her defense attorney claims that Courtney Clenney was actively seeking therapy to process the trauma she experienced the night that he was stabbed. However, CBS News spoke to Obumseli's family, who described him as a soft-spoken man and doubt claims that Courtney stabbed him in self-defense.
"We have no cause to believe that this was a case of self-defense. Toby was raised by a very strong family with strong morals, strong values, he does not come from that," Karen Egbuna, a cousin of Obumseli, told the network.
Law enforcement officials have stated that Courtney will be extradited back to Florida in the near future.
