Time may have passed, but Princess Diana has made a solid, lasting impression on history that will not be erased. The royal figure was loved by many for her charming personality and kind heart.

Due to her status, Diana had easy access to some of the biggest stars in the world back then, and one of them really caught her attention: the late singer and former Wham! member, George Michael.

Despite hailing from opposite backgrounds, the two had an awkward connection for years. One was a pop sensation, while the other was a well-known and adored princess. They managed to keep their bond intact by offering support to one another during trying moments.

How Princess Diana Met George Michael

Gavin, who just published a book on the musician, said in an interview with Fox News Digital how the princess had a crush on Michael and discussed her interest in pop stars.

"Princess Diana had a thing for pop stars," James Gavin told Fox News Digital. "She was a fan girl. She was infatuated with pop stars, and she got to know many of them. She worked with some of them and invited them to perform at her events… And as for George, there was no denying that she developed a crush on him."

Michael and Diana met at the Live Aid concert in London's Wembley stadium on July 13, 1985. The singer was scheduled to perform alongside stars like Queen, David Bowe, and Elton John at the event. On the other hand, the princess was there to advocate for charity.

An Awkward Friendship

During those years, Michael remained "shy" about the princess. Gavin, in his book, explained the reasons behind the singer's action, which seemed logical as they were both from different worlds.

"George Michael was shy about Princess Diana for two reasons," the author said. "One, she was the Princess of Wales. Even though George Michael was George Michael, Princess Diana was more popular than the queen. "

He continued: "George became aware of the fact that she had the hots for him. Now, of course, this wouldn't have gone anywhere, but you can imagine how uncomfortable this made him. So he kept her at a distance. The friendship consisted of occasional lunches and phone calls."

Regardless of the awkwardness in their relationship, the two continued to support each other during difficult times.

Diana called Michael once late at night amid her divorce from Prince Charles. While she was recording a message for him, the singer, who was with his buddy Andros Georgiou, recognized the voice and took up the phone to provide support via a heartfelt discussion.

"How are you, my darling?" Michael asked the princess. "It's been pretty grim, but we're near the end of it," she replied, alluding to her ongoing divorce, before discussing it in detail.

Similarly, Diana also personally contacted the grieving star to comfort him after his mother passed away from illness in 1997.

Throughout their friendship, Michael would call Diana "my darling," a token of his affection for her. He even presented her with a gold watch. However, their relationship remained platonic, as in reality, Michael was gay, a status he hid from the princess till her death.

Diana died on August 31, 1997, ending her ties to Michael. In a horrific tragedy, the princess lost her life and the lives of her new boyfriend Emad "Dodi" Fayed and her chauffeur Henri Paul; Paul was subsequently discovered to have been driving while under the influence of alcohol and prescription medication.

Michael was "heartbroken" about the princess's passing. Years later, that feeling from Diana's death was piled on by the demise of Whitney Houston as Michael began to believe he would die in a similar tragic manner.

Although he was no soothsayer, his use of narcotics, including cocaine, ecstasy, and marijuana, brought Michael closer to death's door each year. He gradually lost his writing edge and attended fewer performances before beginning to experience various health issues until his demise in 2016.

Despite all the suffering he went through, his music changed so many people's lives and will undoubtedly continue to do so.
