The outlet reported that Jerrod will create a new comedy stand-up special for HBO as part of the deal. This will be his fourth stand-up special at HBO, following 2014's "Love at the Store," 2017's "8," and 2022's "Rothaniel."

It's also expected that he will develop other projects for the network, but no details have been confirmed yet.

Nina Rosenstein, EVP, HBO Programming, released a statement, saying, “Working with Jerrod over the past 10 years has been a true gift. He’s endlessly creative and thoughtful, and with every project we’ve done together, he pushes the boundaries of comedy forward in totally new and unexpected ways. His last special, Rothaniel, was absolutely captivating and we are so proud to continue this partnership.”

Carmichael most recently wrote, executive produced, and starred in his stand-up performance, "Rothaniel," in which he came out as gay. Earlier this year, he told GQ that when he came out, the only person who reached out to him was his 15-year-old niece.

During April's comedy special, Jerrod told the audience that he had a “secret” he had been keeping “from my father, my mother, my family, my friends, and you. Professionally, personally. And the secret is that I'm gay.”

He said that he only got one text after he came out from his niece, which read, “I see you. I hear you.”

Although he didn’t get the outpouring of support he might have expected, Jerrod said, “I love this generation,” adding, “I actually f--- with them, and f--- all those comedians that are going so hard against them.”

One comedian that he called out specifically was Dave Chappelle, now 48. Chappelle has received criticism for allegedly transphobic remarks he made during his own Netflix special, "The Closer." One of Chappelle's most vocal supporters is Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos.

“Chappelle, do you know what comes up when you Google your name, bro?” Jerrod asked during the interview. “That’s the legacy? Your legacy is a bunch of opinions on trans s---?”

“It's an odd hill to die on,” Jerrod noted. “And it's like, hey, bro. Who the f--- are you? Who do you f---? What do you like to do? Childish jokes aside, who the f-- are you? It's just kind of played. But he's choosing to die on the hill. So, alright, let him.”

He also took issue with some Chappelle fans alleging that he's been the victim of cancel culture due to his remarks.

“Who’s getting canceled for what they’ve said?” he asked. “What does that mean, that people are mad on Twitter? Everybody’s fine. These grown men are fine.”

“I think, a lot of times, people who offer nothing truthful or meaningful about themselves then complain about society at large and create this boogeyman,” he continued. “It’s like, listen, that’s the most urgent thing in your life? God bless you.”
