Kristin Cavallari has called the decision to get a divorce from former NFL quarterback Jay Cutler both scary and the best decision. And now two years after announcing the divorce, Cavallari is ready to get her new chapter started.
Standing Strong and Ready to Move Forward
“The Hills” alum opened up about her divorce and how it’s changing her in what she called the “most vulnerable” interview ever on The School of Greatness podcast with host Lewis Howes. “The scariest thing that I’ve ever done is get a divorce. But it’s been the best thing that I’ve ever done and that has really jump-started my journey on self-love and figuring out who I am now,” the 35-year-old reality star said on the podcast. She went on to explain that she’s now in a good place.
She’s Open to Finding New Love
After taking some time out for herself, she’s now inspired by the idea of new love. “I’m actually excited to see who I can be in a new relationship because I feel like I’ve done so much work the last few years,” she said. “I’m in no rush to be in a new relationship, but when I am, it will excite me to see how different I can be.” Cavallari has said that she chose not to start dating immediately after her split from Cutler, 39. “It’s gotten me to a really peaceful place. I feel the best I’ve ever felt in my whole life. I’m the happiest I’ve ever been. I’m no longer afraid of getting hurt,” she explained.
Making the Decision to Part Ways
The couple was married for nearly seven years and decided it was time to part ways in April 2020. They wrote a joint statement on Instagram at the time of the split, “We have nothing but love and respect for one another and are deeply grateful for the years shared, memories made, and the children we are so proud of. This is just the situation of two people growing apart.”
The two share three children – Camden, 9, Jaxon, 7, and Saylor, 6. Cavallari said on the podcast that the kids are her main priority and that they have taught her to be more attentive of her own well-being. “My kids have inspired me to become the best version of myself. I can only be as good to my kids as I am to myself,” she said. “If I am empty, I have nothing to give them. Being able to be energized and love myself so I can love on my kids – and support them and encourage them – that’s the most important thing.”
The Journey from Dating to Divorce
The two met through a mutual friend in 2010 and immediately hit it off. They got engaged the following year but ended up breaking off the engagement just three months later. Later that year, they reunited and picked up where they left off. The Uncommon James founder revealed in her book, Balancing in Heels, that the couple saw a therapist to help them rebuild their relationship. The two got married in June 2013.
Hiding the Marital Problems on the Show
They were able to keep a lid on their troubles while filming their show, “Very Cavallari.” As the problems grew, they were able to keep a lot private and out of the spotlight. Cavallari told People, “I always thought it was interesting when people would refer to us as ‘couple goals.’ I was like, ‘If you guys only knew,'” she said.
