As first reported by Consequence, Taylor toured with Alanis Morissette as a drummer before he joined the Foo Fighter.

Although Alanis was quiet on social media after his sudden passing, she dedicated her recent performance at the London O2 Arena to him. While she sang “Ironic,” footage of Taylor performing on stage and behind the scenes played on giant screens behind her.

After the song ended, one of the screens read, “In Memory of Taylor Hawkins.”

Taylor had toured with Alanis from 1995 to 1997 after playing for Canadian singer Sass Jordan. He always credited Alanis for giving him his “big break” and opened up to KLOS 95.5 about the first time he heard Alanis’ music.

“I remember like, putting the cassette [for ‘You Oughta Know’] in my girlfriend’s car and my girlfriend was like, ‘That’s gonna be huge,'” Hawkins recalled at the time. “I was like, ‘Yeah, uh huh.’ Like, you could kinda hear it. And so I joined the band or she put the band together and I was lucky enough to get the gig as the drummer.”

Dave Grohl, the frontman for the Foo Fighters, wrote in his 2021 memoir “The Storyteller: Tales of Life and Music” that even Alanis knew that Taylor would eventually leave her for the Foo Fighters.

“During his stint as Alanis Morissette’s drummer, long before he became a Foo Fighter, we would bump into each other backstage at festivals all over the world, and our chemistry was so obvious that even Alanis herself once asked him, ‘What are you going to do when Dave asks you to be his drummer?'” Dave wrote in his memoir.
