The tractor-trailer was abandoned near train tracks and an auto salvage yard and for now, it's not clear as to how many people were actually inside, because it seems some individuals managed to escape. So not everyone has been accounted for, and while three people have been arrested, again, it's not clear if they are wholly or partially to blame for the tragedy.

The Migrants Likely Died From The Heat

Temperatures in San Antonio reached a blazing 102-103 degrees and the victims in the 18-wheeler likely succumbed to a combination of heat stroke, dehydration, and more.

San Antonio Fire Chief Charles Hood also stated that the fire department was also called to the scene after someone reported a dead individual and when they arrived on the scene, it was disturbing. They found the trailer with one body outside and multiple bodies inside.

Said Chief Hood, "The patients that we saw were hot to the touch. They were suffering from exhaustion, with no signs of water in the vehicle. There was also no working air conditioning unit on the vehicle."

He also said that none of the rescue personnel could imagine a scene like this, saying. "We're not supposed to open up a truck and see stacks of bodies in there."

San Antonio mayor Ron Nirenberg also tweeted:

Mayor Nirenberg also added, "Our job is not to ask why. Our job is to ask how we can help. That's why you're seeing medical assistance. As far as the federal investigation goes, that's in the hands of the feds. I'm sure there will be more questions and hopefully some answers as we move forward."
