Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, TX. will be demolished.
The Mayor of Uvalde, TX. Don McLaughlin, made the announcement on Tuesday, June 21, during a city council meeting.
“My understanding, and I had this discussion with the superintendent, that school will be demolished,” McLaughlin said during the heated meeting. “You can never ask a child to go back or teacher to go back in that school ever.”
Robb Elementary School Will Be Demolished
The once pleasant elementary school, which taught second, third and fourth grade, is now tainted with blood, trauma and sadness.
On Tuesday, May 24, an 18-year-old gunman walked into Robb Elementary School and opened fire on innocent students and teachers.
19 children and two adults were confirmed dead in the aftermath of the senseless and tragic shooting. The shooter was one of the adults killed. 17 others were injured during the attack.
The Mayor of Uvalde Doesn't Want Kids Or Teachers In The Building Ever Again
According to reports, school shooter Salvador Ramos crashed his car into a ditch and was able to get past law enforcement. He entered the school, found an open classroom and locked himself inside. That’s when he opened gunfire on the room.
Robb Elementary is the deadliest school shooting in Texas’ history.
According to a report from Axios, officials announced on June 3 during a Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District Board meeting that students and staff would not return to the school’s campus.
Superintendent Hal Harrell told parents at the meeting that the building would never again house students.
"We're not going back to that campus," Harrell said during the meeting.
The Superintendent has plans to share a new address for Robb Elementary in the "very near future."
“We have plans for it to become something other than a school site,” Harrell said.
Mayor McLaughlin did not specify where students will attend school next year, nor did he say what will be built in place of the school.
School District Police Chief Slammed By Victims' Family Members
Tuesday’s city council meeting saw public comment from outraged community members over council member Pete Arredondo’s response to the shooting.
Arredondo serves as the school district’s police chief, and he’s been massively criticized for making the executive decision to wait more than an hour for backup instead of confronting the shooter.
Ramos was killed by US Border Patrol.
Several victims’ family members expressed outrage and disdain for Arredondo’s actions, and the council unanimously voted to deny him a requested a leave of absence.
