“Bridgerton” star Jonathan Bailey is teaming up with “Star Wars” Felicity Jones for a new comedy called “Maria.”
Bailey is best known to fans of the Netflix period drama for his role as Viscount Anthony Bridgerton, head of the titular family household. Meanwhile, Star Wars fans recognize Jones as Jyn Erso from 2016’s “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.”

The news was reported by Deadline, which revealed that Simon Amstell is writing and directing the comedy.
“The Theory of Everything” actress will star in the title role as a young woman who reportedly has a “history of running from reality.” Maria struggles to accept her age, her boyfriend, and her father’s indifference. While attending her father’s wedding, she meets Raffy, her new stepbrother. They have immediate sexual chemistry. If that wasn’t bad enough, her father had also been diagnosed with a terminal illness.
“Harry Potter” alum Jason Isaacs will play Maria’s father and Bailey will play Maria’s boyfriend, Eddy. The feature is scheduled to film in both the U.K. and the U.S. this fall.
Amstell will also serve as executive producer on the project, alongside EMU Films’ Michael Elliott, Jim Mooney and Walli Ullah, and Cora Palfrey and Sarah Lebutsch from Independent Entertainment. In a statement, Amstell said, “I’m incredibly excited to begin shooting Maria this year with Felicity Jones. Our hope is that making a film about our culture’s fear of aging and death will be an absolute sensation.”
Before he gets to that project, however, Bailey will be filming season 3 of “Bridgerton,” which is filming in London in only a few short weeks. Now that Viscount Anthony Bridgerton is married to Kate Sharma (Simone Ashley), Bailey reveals what’s in store for the newlyweds by the time season 3 rolls around.
Bailey Teases What’s To Come For ‘Bridgerton’ Season 3
In April, Bailey sat down with Harper's Bazaar to discuss what fans can expect for season 3, and many were excited to learn that more of Kate's background will be explored in the upcoming season.
When asked about where Kate and Anthony will be by the time the third season returns, Bailey revealed that seeing the new couple in "the honeymoon phase is essential."
"I think Kate’s gonna have a shock," he added. "She’s had a lot of responsibility within her family, but she knows nothing [about how] to head up the Bridgerton family. She is now gonna be the viscountess, so that’s gonna be an interesting balance between her taking over from Lady Violet (Ruth Gemmell)."
Fans were frustrated that most of Kate's past, like her fear of thunderstorms, was explored in-depth in the books but cut from the show. Bailey acknowledged that there is still a lot more information that fans have yet to learn about the new version of Kate in the Netflix series.
"And there’s a lot, still, in the books that I know will be stitched into their relationship going forward—about her past, about their shared grief and sense of mortality," Bailey explained. "But then, my God, for them to have their firstborn, Edmund, is gonna be incredibly moving, especially because both of their relationships with their parents have been so complicated. I think they’ll really come together to be incredible, loving parents, and that’s gonna be joyful to see."
Before their final dance of the season, Anthony jokingly asks Kate how many fingers he's holding up. When asked if it was "intentional" to have the number of fingers match the number of kids Kate and Anthony have in the books, Bailey replied, "Yeah, of course."
He then backtracked and said, "But maybe it’s the number of seasons that they’ll be in. You never know! We’ll have to wait and see."
Season 3 will be diverging from the books and focusing on the love story between Colin Bridgerton and Penelope Featherington. However, fans are still hoping to see plenty more scenes between Kate and Anthony.
Season 3 of "Bridgerton" begins filming this summer in London.
