Judge Greg Mathis Weighs In On Oscars Slap: 'You Commit An Assault, You Commit A Crime'

Judge Mathis is delivering his verdict on the slap between Will Smith and Chris Rock that took place at the 94th Academy Awards back in March.
On March 27, Chris Rock made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith and her hair loss condition, known as alopecia, by referring to her as “G.I. Jane.” This caused the “King Richard” actor to lose his cool, storm the stage, and slap Rock across the face before taking his seat and calling him out.
It seems that everyone in Hollywood has a new take and a different opinion on the slap seen around the world, and Judge Greg Mathis, 62, is weighing in on the “assault” that took place on the Oscars stage.

Although some have tried to downplay the incident after Rock decided not to press charges, the former Michigan 36th District Court judge said that the “Independence Day” actor was a crime and amounted to assault in a new interview with Page Six.
“I think anytime you commit an assault, you commit a crime,” Mathis said. “And committing an assault, no matter how embarrassing or humiliating, it does not legitimize an assault.”
However, Mathis is a husband himself and admitted that he could see where the “Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air” actor was coming from when Smith wanted to defend his wife. However, Mathis said that he would have handled the situation a bit differently than Smith did, admitting that he would have “yelled from my seat.”
“I gotta tell ya, I would’ve been a little disruptive,” Mathis confessed. “I would say, ‘Watch out, bro! Don’t talk about my wife again, Chris.’ I might have done that or be more diplomatic. I would speak with Chris backstage and let him know that he insulted my wife and that he owes my wife an apology. That’s the professional Greg Mathis.”

However, Mathis couldn’t help but add, “If someone smacks me, I can’t walk around Detroit. I would have to do something.”
“Before they slap, those guys they crack a joke,” Mathis said of the “Hollywood types” before adding, “But with me, if they smack me, it is another level. I would check him in some form or fashion.”
