After winning the AEW World Championship at Double or Nothing against 'Hangman' Adam Page on May 29th, CM Punk injured himself days later on AEW Dynamite on June 1st in a tag match to such a degree and such seriousness that he now needs surgery.
Punk, who was hobbled and walking gingerly addressed the crowd at AEW Rampage on June 3rd and didn't say how long he would be on the shelf, but he did speak about his immediate future that including surgery. But what does it mean for him in the long run and for his career and what also happens with the AEW Championship moving forward?

Not that you ever want to get injured, but talk about terrible timing as CM Punk has suffered a major setback in his championship reign, where he never was even able to defend his title once as he announced on AEW Rampage that he is injured and must undergo surgery. On the June 3rd show of AEW Rampage, the current AEW World Champion who was visibly upset came out and told the sold-out crowd in California that his body was broken and only surgery would fix things.
Just the other day, The Blast wrote our reasons on why Punk should lose the title immediately, but we never wanted to see it happen this way. As Punk was delivering the bad news, he also noted that this is not the last we will see of him as he will only be done when he can't do it anymore, and that is when the wheels fall off as he mentioned in his passionate promo that the wheels “have not fallen off,” but one of them is indeed broken.
He promised he would be back and would come back better than ever. He also noted that he now has something to prove upon his return. And whenever that return happens we found out what will happen to his championship. At first it appeared that Punk would have to relinquish the title but AEW owner Tony Khan announced other plans and though complex, it shows that the show must go on.
Punk appeared to originally injure himself in a six-man tag team match where Punk and FTR defeated Max Caster and The Gunn Club. It was after a bad jump off the rope that caught his leg and or foot in which he landed in a compromising position.
The injury was seen later in the night as The Blast was at the AEW After Party in the Forum Club after Dynamite, where Punk attended and we witnessed not only him having a heavy limp but also a genuine concern from Punk on the injury as he kept focusing on it throughout the night.

Some good news for Punkas he will not have to vacate his title as there will now be a battle royal to kick off the show next week on Dynamite. The winner of that match will then face Jon Moxley in the main event and then the winner will go on to their future co-branded pay-per-view with New Japan Pro Wrestling as they present, AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door which will then have someone compete for the Interim AEW World Title. AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door is meant to take place on June 26th.
AEW has now confirmed additional details on the title matchup from the New Japan side of things. What is now going to take place is at NJPW Dominion later this month, Hiroshi Tanahashi will face Hirooki Goto. The winner will then go on to face whoever wins the AEW’s Eliminator Match-winner at Forbidden Door for the AEW Interim World Championship.
Once CM Punk is cleared to compete, the interim champion will face Punk to unify the titles.
This could be months from now but Punk will hopefully return in his best shape ever and get a chance to unify the championship. But that is still far down the road. It will be a different AEW by then and a different CM Punk.
Until then, we all wish CM Punk a speedy recovery.
