“Jeopardy!” champion Mattea Roach seems to have made an impression on her fellow contestants!
Although the 23-year-old Canadian tutor’s win streak has come to an end with 23 games, Mattea is going to take to the “Jeopardy!” stage for the 2022 Tournament of Champions later this year. Mattea will face off against other “Jeopardy!” greats from season 38, including Matt Amodio, Jonathan Fisher, Andrew He, Amy Schneider, and more!
It seems that the many competitors who lost to her hold no ill will, and are hoping that she makes it all the way to the top!
Mattea Roach’s Former Competitors Are Cheering Her On!
Earlier this week, former “Jeopardy!” competitors that faced Mattea Roach and lost participated in a Reddit AMA asking about their experience. It should be noted that Danielle Maurer also took part in the Reddit AMA, except she faced Mattea… and won!
Regardless, it seems like all of the contestants revealed that they plan to cheer Mattea on in the Tournament of Champions later this year.
Danielle Maurer revealed, “Oh, I'm 10000% cheering for Mattea!” Caitlin Hayes said, “Mattea all the way!!” Terri Huggins wrote, “Team Mattea, but I also adore Matt, and if Ryan makes it in, well …”
Although their strategy didn’t help out against Mattea, know was known for her smaller, conservative wagers, other “Jeopardy!” greats still shared the strategies that they entered the show with to help other potential contestants.
Danielle Maurer Shares Her ‘Jeopardy!’ Strategy
Former contestant Danielle Maurer revealed the strategy that she used to beat Mattea to help out other “Jeopardy!” hopefuls.
“Know your wagering strategy ahead of time,” she advised. “Have a rough idea of what you're willing to risk on DDs if you feel comfortable (e.g. true DD up to $X) vs what you'll risk if you're not. And look at wagering strategies for Final J, especially for 2nd and 3rd place players. The prep I did in this area was far more helpful than any studying I did.”
“This is a tie between Wikipedia and J Archive,” she said, referring to the fan-created “Jeopardy!” website that created an archive of past clues. “I skimmed a lot of articles on the former, which was great for refreshing knowledge, but an equally great way to build a trivia knowledge base is to just answer trivia questions, so I played 3-5 practice games per day using questions from J Archive.”
“There were one or two things that came up,” she added. “Nothing I remember in my game against Mattea, but the following week my world history refresh was helpful in Japanese History and my Canadian geography refresh helped me with the Beaufort Sea clue.”
In another question, when asked if there was anything about her game that she would change, Danielle revealed that she would take more risks trying to buzz in on answers that she felt “fairly confident” in. She explained, “There were a couple of times I didn't ring in when I should've (most notably the Richard III clue in the Shakespeare category), and getting a few wrong spooked me a little.”
Although Danielle will not be moving on to the Tournament of Champions, current champion Ryan Long just secured his spot in the Tournament of Champions as of Thursday’s game. But will he be able to beat Amy, Matt, or Mattea in the Tournament of Champions later this year? That’s what fans can’t wait to find out!
